Hello there,
I'm wanting to send a parcel from the UK to Australia. It should weigh close to 8kg, at something like 40 cm in length, and I'm happy to send it surface mail at the cheapest possible price. It is also paper only. I've tried working out via Royal Mail's site at least some idea as to how much it would cost, but am still in the dark. Maybe I'm just too dim to understand how their price checking works. Is there anyone out there who could enlighten me on this?

That's quite a hefty parcel. I had a wee play around on RM's pricefinder. They don't seem to offer surface mail anymore. To send 8kg by air to Oz costs £hundreds. Maybe you could try a courier....UPS, Fedex etc

Seriously? :-/ I see they now call Surface Mail "International Economy."
I sent the same boxes, four of them, from Australia to the UK, via sea (taking almost three months), and they cost about $60/£35 each.
Just looking a couriers now. Yes, that might be the way to go.

I would take it to a Post Office and get an exact price myself, and make sure you also fill in a customs declaration too.

Royal Mail have an absolute weight limit of 5Kg for parcels containing printed matter, and 2Kg for everything else, when posting internationally, for both air mail and surface mail. If it's over 5Kg you will automatically be referred to the similar Parcelforce services, which have a 20Kg or 30Kg per parcel limit for most countries.
You might be able to save money by splitting the parcel into two parcels of 4Kg each, if that's practical in this case. It will depend on the exact size and weight of the parcels as to whether this saves you money or not.
Although the RM and PFW services are broadly similar, there are differences around delivery time, compensation for loss or damage etc.

Mmmm... thanks, but I'm looking into couriers now. For what I want to send, that seems much more practical and cheaper.
