Only relevant facts please simply, this anecdote should be conveniently forgotten like all the poor decisions North of the border. I think Alec is hoping to be nominated and elected as King Salmond the first or perhaps El Presidente the saviour of the Scottish nation..............well until reality sets in and Alec realises he doesn't have the money to fulfil the promises.simply_the_best wrote:Don't forget Walrus, 11 SNP MP's shared a lobby with Thatcher's Coservatives to bring down Callaghans government in 79 to pave the way for 18 years of Tory rule.

What happened when Czechoslovakia split into two countries?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: If Scotland votes aye
Scotland has 8% of the UK population.
Scotland has 32% of the UK land area.
So Scotland has just a quarter of the UK population density.
So Royal Mail has to deliver up to four times further in Scotland - and currently for the same 'universal' price.
So after the "yes" vote surely Royal Mail, which is based in London, will look towards ditching their Scottish operations to make their English, Welsh and Northern Irish operations more sustainable and satisfy their shareholders, only a small proportion of which reside north of the border.

Well in that case we could just march in and impose martial law and hang, draw and quarter Alec and people would be talking about him centuries from now.simply_the_best wrote:dvbuk55 wrote:Only relevant facts please simply, this anecdote should be conveniently forgotten like all the poor decisions North of the border. The first Scottish Independence Referendum in 1979 Yes 52% No 48%walrus wrote:The rise of Scottish nationalism is a tragedy and we will pay dearly for this lunacy. So how on earth did we get here?
Thatcher.
The Scottish Covenent proposing home rule in 1949 attracted 2 million signatures from a population of 5.1 million.
The home rule movement has been around for over 160 years, If you start your politics "essay" with a flawed premise I'm afraid it gets no more than an F for turning up.

It wasn't an Independence referendum, and the rules for winning it were different.

Re: If Scotland votes aye
Independence, devolution, devo-max, home rule are all the same thing, steps on the path to separation and once you start along that path the result is inevitable. This isn't about "nationalism" which is a word used mostly by the left outside its true definition to evoke images of Jackboots and hatred. This is about the ridiculous position of a country having its own parlaiment without the powers to represent its own people and the inevitable resolution to that situation, breaking the political and economic union we have with the rest of the UK. It may happen on the 19th or it may take longer but its a runaway train no-one can stop now.simply_the_best wrote:It wasn't an Independence referendum
The reality of the situation is about as far away from walrus's dystopian "nationalism" scenario as is possible. The only nationalism on show is a rather romantic shortbread tin and tartan version that we're all guilty of after a couple of drams.
Makes no difference to the result nor the point I was making that there was an appetite for home rule long before Thatcher arrived on the scene.and the rules for winning it were different.

11 MP's is the highest the seperatists have ever returned in a General election, just after the Oil was discovered funnily enough, so not that much of an appetite.

Re: If Scotland votes aye
At the time both the SNP and the Labour Party supported devolution, It was Asquith's Liberal Party who first suggested the idea of "home rule all round" and the home rule movement was founded by the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights, a body close to the Conservative Party, I think that's more or less everybody covered....everybody's a separatist apparently.simply_the_best wrote:11 MP's is the highest the seperatists have ever returned in a General election, just after the Oil was discovered funnily enough, so not that much of an appetite.

Sturgeon back in 2005 explaining that companies moving their HQ's south will lead to job losses yet last night when questioned on the National news that prospect didn't seem to bother her too much
