The argument is, if the porch door is shut, we are to assume that it is locked and thus a secure delivery point. The minute we have to open a door to leave a parcel, we are showing to ourselves and any would be thieves on-looking that the delivery is not secure.
I've noticed a lot of people leaving their front door open during this hot weather. I take it then, you shouldn't post through the letter box on the open door while calling out "Post!" as this shows the delivery point is insecure? At least calling out "post" lets the addressee know that they have mail. Or should one return the mail and endorse it as unsecure location?
I think technically, then yes you should take it back to the DO endorsed. However, common sense should apply. I certainly know what I would do in this situation and have done for nearly 10 years and not had a single complaint or issue regarding this.
Good thing about having long arms is I can do the old reach around to leave post behind the door out of site! Easier than trying to mail it through the letterbox on an open door! :cool
"the old reach around" ooh err missus!

my rules. I will try delivery to one neighbour for tracked items. General packets if i know the neighbour is likely to be in or the customer has requested it . Recorded deliveries go back to the office. If a porch door is open - the packet goes in.

Cue the comments of "I can get half my round done in 20 minutes etc" For Gods sake, slow down, it's not a race.

Leave it with the neighbour

With all due respect you think its pathetic because your looking at this from a receivers point of view not a senders, or an employers.
Kezroyalmail wrote:This is pathetic.if the person doesn't want mail left in a unlocked porch, then lock it.
If people don't want stray dogs in their garden should they lock their gate - meaning we can't enter.

Its not about why the resident leaves a porch open, but what you do when you attempt to deliver.
Kezroyalmail wrote:if they can't lock it put a sign on door saying please put mail in inner door and parcels send back to office.
Why would they. If you comply they get their post easy for them - but if it goes missing the argument of "I was only following orders" wont wash. The risk is entirely on YOU.

Also what you suggest the residents put on a notice is exactly what you should be doing anyway. Do you have a notice for the milkman indicating where he should leave your pinks of semi-skinned. :chuckle :chuckle
Kezroyalmail wrote:as if we have all the crap of delivering and we have to make sure the porch is safe.
No you don't

All you have to do is make sure the mail is safe, that's the extent of your responsibility. The security of the buildings is theirs.
Kezroyalmail wrote:thats the homeowners job.i leave my porch open when expecting a parcel if not I lock it,simple.
But as the receiver there is no risk for you, just the poor worker who may be taking a chance with his job.

So what would people suggest when leaving mail in insecure rural locations ? ,I'm talking feed bags on locked gates , upturned buckets in hedges , drop in on the Kitchen table ,stables,American style boxes at the end of long Farm lanes etc ( on some of the duties I cover this can account for nearly 50% )

Do we return the mail to the office and endorse it ? Bearing in mind that this is the way that it has been delivered for many years without issue and I'm 100 % sure that it would attract many complaints if we did.

It does seem to me that there are different rules for Town and Rural duties , I have yet to get a definitive answer when asking various Managers

The rules are the same for all and are given in the opening post(s), what you and your recipients are after is special privileges and I'm afraid they're not coming any time soon!

Customers should lock their porch if their worried about security. If they can't lock it put a sign up saying put mail in inner letterbox and parcels send back to office if not in.Thats what a few of my customers do.most say leave in porch.they would go mad if I put a P739 through

problem is your getting mixed up who the customer actually is, its the sender not the recipients, you are supposed to look out for the senders interest not the recipients

your recipients may go mad, but you are only doing exactly what you should be doing, better to leave a 739 and have an unhappy recipient than get a p45 for lost stolen packets and have an unhappy postie who only thought he was doing someone a favour

Sounds like one rule for letters and another for parcels.letters that go in porches are always unsafe as not many lock the porch.so should we open every porch to see if it's locked? We would have arms like Popeye.there would be loads of posties with tennis elbow.sounds like RM don't really know how to deal with this.

How can they say letters and little packets that you can get through porch letterbox are ok in an unsecured porch.letters are just as bad as big parcels what with all the fraud these days.

They are not ok in unsecure porches. The rule is exactly same for parcels and letters, if door is shut it is assumed to be secure, the householder then has the onus on them as to whether it is actually locked or not, if you try the door the onus is then on the postie for the security

What! So if the porch is open and there's no other place to post LETTERS I have to P739 them letters?
Holy crap this is doin my head in.
Sometimes I open the porch when they have a low letterbox (saves my back) so then I realise it's not safe and have to take the letters back to office
