Wrong House Number, Correct PostCode... Lost

Post by Kay91 »

Hello,

I have a quite urgent issue as someone had sent an important letter out to someone for me. Unfortunately and rather stupidly :arrrghhh they didn't include a return address or track the item and I am panicking now that I have found out the letter has not been delivered. The person who had sent it out had the correct name, street, and postcode written on it, but unfortunately got the wrong house number (a difference of one number.. for an example lets say 15 and 17). They have checked with their neighbors who haven't received anything and I am trying to track it down. It was sent from LN12 and is going to W8 (clear to London). Does anyone know what are the odds it could turn up at their neighbors house, would they deliver based off just the house number? Or would the post office run through the postcode and house number and figure out that it doesn't exist and in that case which lost or claims office would it manage to get to so that I contact them? :pray Please and Thank you for all your help.

I do believe the London postcode is house specific.

It would be delivered to the house number it is addressed to.

but on the off chance that the postie who realised the address did not exist has followed procedure I would contact Royal Mail and tell them whats happened, there is a slim chance that if you can describe the envelope and it contents then when it gets to the Returned letters branch they can correct the address and forward it on.

I have been informed that the house number we put does also match the postcode we put.. so the only issue we have at the moment is that the name was wrong. So ideally it should have been delivered to their neighbors house, but they haven't received it. I called the number mentioned above, but was told they cannot search for items. I don't suppose anyone would know of the specific london offices or where I could possibly call to start a search.

Without tracking its next to impossible to do a search in a delivery office. An average Office will get 50,000 to 150,000 items of mail daily and there is no way to search them individually as they will be spread throughout the office. Also, all Delivery Office should operate a clear office policy which means no mail should be left in the building overnight unless its waiting collection after a delivery attempt.

Mail centres its even worse as they will have literally millions of items to go through. All you can do is hope it turns up at the correct address, or that an honest neighbour gets it and brings it to you. :cry

No, the London postcode is not house specific but, as elsewhere, each postcode covers a street or part of a large street.
W8 a bit longer and hopefully it will turn up.

It caused me several times headache :arrrghhh because everywhere I have to contact via telephone all of my bank, insurer, council, delivery service ect. because I live in a flat which has not registered yet in the google addresses or Royal mail address book. The council are responsible for telling Royal Mail when there are changes to addresses, but Email the address to the Address Management team - addressmaintenance@royalmail.com. Let them know your full address details, where the property is (for example what is either side of the property) also is it a new property? they''ll then let you know if this can be added or whether you’ll need to register the property with your Local Authority.
