How should a special delivery be done correctly?

I've had issue with SD. Recently I've been waiting for an item by SD. Two days later and nothing. The track and trace says delivered but the signature isn't mine, can't make it out, but my name has been printed. I think the sender has written the right address but the postie has misread the house number. The sender realized after sending it that the number on the receipt was wrong too, being read off the parcel wrongly! Does the sender ring RM?

Yes, the sender should contact Royal Mail.

It sounds like the address was wrong, but it's easier just to blame the postman and say he didn't read it properly. If the sender wrote the address down wrong, it's up to them to right the wrong. However, if you could find out the address (from the senders receipt maybe), you could maybe pop round and ask for your item. They might have just signed for it and accepted it without realising it wasn't for them. They might be more than happy to hand it over to you after you explain the mistake. If just the number was wrong, presumably it won't be far from your house.

Though there is an issue here, it should have your name on the signature unless it's delivered to someone with the same name as you, postie should be getting the name of the person signing for the item and not just typing in the name on the special delivery item

It's wrong I know, but it's so much hassle asking the persons name at the door and inputting it into the PDA before asking for a signature. So much easier to assume the person answering the door is the person named, or has the same family name, and putting that into the PDA before knocking. That's the way i was shown, but i always knew it was the wrong thing to do. All posties I know do the same thing, so it's no surprise OP's name is there but not his signature.

When asking asking for an item to be signed for some people think it must be signed for by the name on the address. They then think in order to get the item they must use that name, so in good faith the name given is entered into the PDA and they then sign it. Some then sign the PDA with their real name or the addressee name. If there was an issue raised later about delivery then the signature and typed name would cause confusion. I have heard some delivery systems require a photo to be taken, IKEA being one of them, can anyone verify this.

its our job to ask and to do our job properly without taking short cuts like this, taking these sort of short cuts causes exactly the situation the op has now, someone has paid to get the correct signature at the door step, and that is what we should be doing, not taking short cuts

Just had a look on RM's website and saw this:

The signature will be provided by the person who takes delivery of the item and not necessarily the person named on the address label.

I had one house which used to have regular SD items, was never signed by the same person more than once, and never with the same surname, and only once did the surname match the name on the item, always used to ask, also bit annoying when I'm at work check on an items progress to find I've signed for it, must say though this only happens with other couriers not RM.
