Redirection
I was hoping someone could give me some info on how redirection works in practice. Is automation used, or does a RM worker cast an eye over redirections?
My wife has a very long surname, which is actually 5 names.
She has 7 names in total.
So, the first problem is that her full surname doesn't fit in the RM online application which is 24 characters maximum.
The second problem is that mail often has different variations of her surname - sometimes initials are used for some of the names, or sometimes some of the names are removed to save space.
Any ideas how to fill in the application for her?
Thanks

A machine reads the letter, and if the address flags as have a redirection setup, is manually sorted and a label applied and the machine reads the label again and sorts it.EBMP wrote:I was hoping someone could give me some info on how redirection works in practice. For surname I think it is manual, but someone can provide some info on that,

Re: Redirection
No, ALL mail, whether or not machine sorted or sequenced, is eventually manually sorted into the delivery frame and it is then that if it's an address with a redirection setup it has a label applied and is redirected.CT10 wrote:A machine reads the letter, and if the address flags as have a redirection setup, is manually sorted and a label applied and the machine reads the label again and sorts it.EBMP wrote:I was hoping someone could give me some info on how redirection works in practice. On the application you can state whether or not all variations of the name are to be redirected and for exceeding the '24 characters maximum' it's probably best to use the space for forenames too.

Re: Redirection
sorry making that one up, it goes to the delivery office as normal and is manually picked out by the postie at the sorting frame who applies redirection label, i would personally contact the local delivery office concerned just after you set up the redirection and let them know exactly what names should be redirectedCT10 wrote:

Re: Redirection
Your making that up. They won't accept that. You need to contact customer services as the local DO won't do anything unless it comes from customer services, especially of this nature.zx135 wrote:sorry making that one up, it goes to the delivery office as normal and is manually picked out by the postie at the sorting frame who applies redirection label, i would personally contact the local delivery office concerned just after you set up the redirection and let them know exactly what names should be redirectedCT10 wrote:

No actually working in a do I know that will work, as after the redirection is set up including all the middle initials then talking to the manager of the do explaining exactly what they are will get the redirection done correctly

I have worked in customer services for 2+ years before moving to a MC. I know for a fact it must got via customer services FIRST.zx135 wrote:CT10 wrote:Your making that up. They won't accept that. Contrary to your "belief" it does not go to the DO first, afterwards it does but must go to customer services first and they will handle it.
Customer give CS a call: 08457777888 - Local call rates apply. Call costs may vary depending on your service provider. Calls may be monitored or recorded for training and compliance purposes. 8am-6pm, Mon-Sun 8am-1pm, Sat
Remember though this is an unofficial forum, so any advice given by me or other members is not official. ;)

i never said it goes to the do first, i said after it is set up, then call the do direct this will produce better results than calling customer servicesCT10 wrote:

also for someone who has been giving advice in customer services for 2 years you obviously dont know much about how the system actually works with the advice you started out with,CT10 wrote: I have worked in customer services for 2+ years before moving to a MC. After the cust has set up the redirection, they should then call the DO and speak to the manager who will be able to take down exactly what should be happeneing and not relying on a second hand message from someone at customer services who like you might equally not know how the redirection service actually works in reality

Re: Redirection
EBMP,
You must disregard the comments of 'CT10' ( or anyone else identified as working in 'MAIL CENTRES/PROCESSING' ) for they are obviously ignorant about what happens with redirections.
'zx135' is though correct and AFTER the redirection has been set up it would be a good idea to go to the Callers Office of your OLD Delivery Office, ask to see the manager and explain to him or whoever what you've told us on here, maybe even writing it all clearly on a 21cm x 15cm piece of card that might then be attached to the actual redirection instruction card to assist the postie dealing with it on a daily basis.
Good luck.
Using computer or 'phone to contact 'Customer Services', wherever they might be, would probably be futile as office based staff have little, if any, idea of the practicalities of working in a Delivery Office.
