Distressing Episode - Royal Mail delivery office

Post by Goat1 »

I am writing in this forum as I am still in shock because of what happened at my local delivery office yesterday.

I was there to collect a parcel as the previous day I had found an 'attempted delivery' note in the hallway. As I got to the the delivery office the following morning I presented the card and identification as requested to a Royal Mail employee behind the counter. After a few minutes waiting, instead of seeing that person coming back with my parcel, 'my' postman appeared from nowhere holding the attempted delivery note. I could not understand why but he looked rather angry and was extremely aggressive as he started to say that he had given me the parcel the previous day and that I must have found the note 'in the street two houses down'. I was utterly shocked as anybody can imagine as I know I had been out at work and I knew what he was saying very aggressively was not true, so I continued to explain that I did not know what he was talking about, and that the only thing I could say was the I had found the note in my hallway with two letters and I was now there to collect my parcel.

This seemed to infuriate him even more. He disappeared a couple of times, I assume to try to find the parcel (even though he continued to say I was effectively lying as he 'knew' I had the parcel) saying with a lot of anger things which I believe were very offensive such as 'I've told you 5 times, do you even understand English?' (I should say here that even though I have lived in the UK for over 15 years I was not born in the UK) and worse of all, ' I know who you are, I know where you live'.

At this point the kind person who had originally taken my attempted delivery note appeared, I suppose to see what was going on. I was so upset that I said I wanted to make a complaint about this, that nobody should be so aggressive to anyone, particularly to a customer, let alone the fact that he was accusing me of something very serious that I knew was NOT true. In the meantime the 'postman' walked off and a third person appeared....with MY PARCEL, which had NEVER been handed to me the previous day as I had been saying all along.

By then I was very shaken and upset. The manager did emerge in the end, I think somebody must have called him. I explained to him what had happen, as they did other customers that in the meantime had gathered and witnessed what had happened. He assured me he was going to take disciplinary action, but I am so worried, I don't understand WHY he behaved like this to me, I have hardly ever seen him when delivering my post and I have never spoken to him before. Does it make a difference I am woman and I am not British? I don't know. I am still so shocked. How will I ever open my front door if he rings the bell to deliver anything? I am actually quite scared. What kind of disciplinary action will they take to prevent him to do this again to me or anyone else? I cannot believe that when the parcel appeared he didn't even apologise.

Royal Mail would normally never release the details of what disciplinary action they take. However, reading your side of the story, the post man was out of order 100% and very rude. I would think he'll get suspended for talking to a customer like that.

I would still follow this up by making an official complaint, so it is logged and they can't just say they'll look into it when they actually don't.

Have a look here for more information on how RM handle complaints and how to make an official one: http://www.royalmail.com/personal/help- ... -complaint" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Perhaps another member will be able to give you more information. Just to be clear, we're an unoffical RM site except that most of our members work for Royal Mail and/or are members of the CWU.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have now logged a formal complaint. I suppose if there is anything positive about what happened is that there were a number of people there who saw and heard everything and were very supportive. Thanks again.
