Royal Mail Lied To Me About Airsure

Post by Meus »

I know Airsure is not a guaranteed service, and I know the target for deliveries is 4-7 days, sometimes longer (hence the emphasis on no guarantee) but having spoken to them over the past few days I am convinced I was conned. My story goes like this.

On Monday the 1st I handed in a gift (an iPod) in its box, put it into a large envelope and chose to send it to the US via Airsure because it was the fastest, and traceable, I was assured. Early the next morning I went on the RM tracking service and entered my reference number, it said it was on its way, having been shipped late Monday. I was told after that I could trace it via the USPS website so I did and it said
Status: Origin Post is Preparing Shipment

We have received notice that the originating post is preparing to dispatch this mail piece.
I checked on Wednesday night and status was still the same. Curiously, I called Royal Mail and asked them why they hadn't yet sent it out. To my surprise, they told me the package left for a plane New York and landed there on early Tuesday morning East Coast time. I just dismissed the USPS site as being a bit late. So I checked again on Thursday evening, still no change. I started to get worried because I was afraid the package was lost as it hasn't even been confirmed to have reached the US. My friend who has used this service before in the past told me the Status on the USPS site usually changes within 24 hours often to show progress of the package. Yet according to my package, it hadn't even left England yet.

I called Royal Mail several times through the day, quite angry at the situation and asked them to confirm to me several times if it had indeed left the UK. My suspicions then towards USPS, who according to them, haven't been able to scan in the package - probably because US customs haven't processed it yet. So I spent the entire day trying to find the number for the US Customs at JFK Airport, and when I got through to them, they too abandoned any blame and told me - now this is where it gets interesting, they only trace packages that are Express or Priority delivery and process them because people paid for them to get processed early. I told them, I paid for mine for my service to be done quickly too. She asked for my reference number, and told me immediately that reference numbers for parcels that begin with LY are not considered Express or Priority, but just regular parcels. In essence, ladies and gentlemen, US Customs and USPS do not, firstly, track LY small packages/letters, they stated to me and to make it more complicated, delivery of items cannot be estimated. They can take a week, or a few weeks according to the people on the phone and believe me, I have spoken to about 20 different US customs and USPS employees.

Royal Mail, however, refute this and say although they cannot do anything about my package on their end, that the Airsure service is indeed traceable regardless. This is their line, ofcourse, however those on the ground who work for USPS say differently, that LY packages are not traced by Customs and rarely if ever traced by USPS. So why then, do Royal Mail, sell this service as so when they cannot themselves even guarantee that the couriers they use for e.g. American deliveries, do not have a guaranteed service for tracing certain packages?

It is 12.19am Saturday the 6th of September. The postal office near the address of my recipient do not have my parcel, I called them up and they told me they can scan it in when they get it and this would show on the tracking website. Nothing as of yet, although it is still Friday for them. Ofcourse, there is the possibility that Customs in Kennedy airport have ceased my parcel, or will eventually cease it and just haven't got round to contacting me about it yet. But then again, it could just be sitting in a storage room, waiting to be delivered one day who knows when. 4 days since its arrived in the US, it hasn't even left Customs out, and then add the duration it will take to travel from New York to California and then to the address - I'm looking at 2 weeks here. 4-7 days? Utter BS

Well thanks for alerting us to that but please remember that on here most people work for Royal Mail, but the site itself is independent, and while we can offer advice it is neither official or will be recognised as such by Royal Mail if you submit a claim to them.

from the "About us page" - We have no affiliation with either Royal Mail or the Communications Workers Union (CWU), except that most of our members work for Royal Mail and/or are members of the CWU

My best advice would be to get on to Postwatch it you believe you have been ripped off.

You could try sending an Email to tell.allan@royalmail.com It doesn't actually go direct to Allan Leighton. But it does go to his Office. It would be worth finding out what explination you get from there.

Please let us know how you get on. And I'm sorry, that you were let down so badly.

Not sure if this wil help but you might want to try a UPS forum,it's unofficial like our site.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I see they get paid at 1.5 x their hourly rate for overtime.
Wish we got that instead of less than our hourly rate.

Meus, has your Parcel arrived yet?
If not, have you had any luck with the Americans, or with Allan Leighton?

Royal Mail Lied To Me About Airsure

Post by Meus »

My Parcel arrived on Saturday. Apparently, Royal Mail made an error of words on their website and also on the phone to me. They said Airsure is trackable yet this implies something which isn't true; that the item will be tracked till it reaches its destination by the US courier. Yet Royal Mail said they meant that it only means you will get delivery confirmation. My problem with this type of service is that it doesn't even confirm if its arrived in the states or not which was the cause of my worry.

Thanks for the help guys

I have just had the same experience with Airsure. The Airsure letter has been lost containing a $300 draft. It was delivered to the US according to Royal Mail and the USPS sites. I phoned USPS and spoke to a woman who told me they do not track numbers beginning with LY. This is the same information that was given to the person in a previous post. I have written to Royal Mail and to the Advertising Standards Authority making a complaint that Royal Mail falsely advertise full end to end tracking when patently they do not.

Airsure to most destinations is fully tracked (and by fully tracked I mean you get 6 tracking points, 3 in the UK and 3 abroad) however the situation with the United States is the real kicker.

They don't track Airsure, once it reaches them it's treated as ordinary first class mail - and the same for items they send to us beginning Lx - neither side is willing to pay the other for the tracking service. So what happens is both Royal Mail and the USPS are quite willing to sell a service that doesn't do as advertised - as paying out compensation costs less than it would do to actually pay USPS to track the item.

And as "neither side is willing to pay the other for the tracking service" is that the same with mail from many or all other counties, and that why there are no longer the red "Royal Mail. Signature Required" stickers added by HMRC ?
And if that's so isn't Royal Mail liable to a scam of valueless items sent here as high value items, then claims made and settled for no record of delivery ?

In terms of other countries and services as far as I'm aware they are still being paid for. It's only with Airsure to the US that neither side are willing to pay, no idea why I have asked before and never gotten an answer.

First post: as my thanks for earlier help.

I have been pursuing this and found that if you go to
https://www.usps.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and enter the 'Tracking No' in the (top right) search box, it provides step by step tracking.
Very detailed with final delivery noted and timed.
e.g "Your item was delivered at 1:13 pm on December 4, 2013 in SOMEWHERE, FL 1234."
Hope it's useful.

Wish I'd found that before http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... on_cry.gif" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
?? Does it work with other services? e.g. European, Canadian, Oz??

No - its only for USPS stuff - it might work if you get something sent from the USA or to them - but it must pass through their facilities. There is no reliable global tracking service, although there are plenty purporting to be such - steer away from them.
