From my recent experience with a few cases of “signed for” small packets sent to Greece using (Royal Mail) things seem to have changed. Could someone confirm this?
Apparently RM “signed for” packets are not any more delivered I n Greece by the Greek post office (ELTA) neither arrive “by air”.
Although one pays for “airmail” the packet 1st goes to Germany, passes to GLS couriers and from there by road it will pass to the Greek ACS couriers and then if you are lucky they will find you to deliver the packet. Of course if you are unaware of this, you are not able to track the packet, you will not find it at the post office and you will not have provided the courier with your contact tel number. If you are lucky delivery will take around 10 days. If they courier does not manage to find you the packet will return back to the UK without you knowing anything about it.
The worst is that neither the sender is aware of this situation.
I think that this is absolutely unacceptable for for Royal Mail and I fully understand that this forum is not the official RM site. I just hope that someone with some more knowledge on the matter would be able to confirm if what I understand is actually the case. Isn't Royal Mail at least obliged to publicize such things so that everyone is informed? How can they even have a “5 days delivery aim” when this is practically impossible using the method they do?

Re: RM International signed for to Greece – A new story?
Thank you for confirming that this is the case.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:yes you are correct in your description on how it gets to Greece
I have been contacting RM today regarding the last International Signed for packet I am expecting. I talked to 3 different people all claiming that the packet arrived in Athens on the 19th of Oct. When I told them that according to my tracking number the packet was in the GLS depot in Germany on the 22nd they suggested that the packet was on its way back to the UK. I contacted again both the Greek Post office and the ACS (the GLS partner in Greece). Both insisted that the packet never came to Greece and it is still on its way from Germany. A bit of mess, right?
Anyway, I called back to Royal Mail, trying at least to figure out how this thing works, and if really makes any sense in getting any more things posted to Greece using Royal Mail. The confusing thing is that some RM international signed for packets I received came the “normal way” through the post office, while others through GLS (and delivered on not by ACS courier). All packets went through the same RM service, had same size weight, so no differentiation. I asked the person on the phone if there is any way I can know in advance who is going to handle my packet; GLS or the post office? The answer was “No”. Royal Mail cannon know, and neither the sender nor the recipient cannot know either.
It wasn't very clear to me who decides and knows then?
