This is my take on the whole coming on to this forum and telling people you won't strike or giving excuses why we shouldn't which I have noticed an increase of lately.

People have their reasons to strike and some people have their reasons not to.

The reasons to strike are all related to industrial issues and the reasons not to are either personal or industrial issues.

I have no problem debating the pros and cons of the industrial issues with people, whether they think a strike will be effective, whether they think a work to rule would be more effective or even whether they think the business is wonderful and we're just a bunch of lazy slackers but I refuse to debate a personal decision based on finances because I am deeply suspicious of anyone who comes on to a forum like this using money as a reason not to strike.

It isn't that this is not a legitimate reason it's because it begs the question why you would want to give that information in the first place.
Not striking is a personal thing, something you have to justify to yourself, not a bunch of total strangers on an internet forum.

You can understand why people strike.
You can understand why people encourage others to strike.
You can even understand why some people don't strike.

It is very hard to understand any reason why a decent person would encourage others not to strike, unlike striking it's not something you need to build support for unless it's your wish to undermine the whole process, and unless you are on the side of senior management that makes no sense at all.

I fully understand why people find it very financially hard to give up even one days money for a strike and why its such a hard thing to do.

However there is the other angle where if you choose to cross a picket line the way you will be viewed by your work colleges will change forever.

No one will ever forget (even in years) that you choose to work whilst they fought for your rights.

Not true I'm afraid.. I have not striked a few times over the years, and noone will expect me to this time either. My relationship with my colleagues is fine, if anything I have gained respect off them for having the balls to say no.

It's also worth pointing out, that many people think they should strike because

a. everyone else is
b. their lives will become difficult in work if they don't

A lot of the time, people strike, and they have no real idea as to why they are doing it, and only strike for the above two reasons.. and that is not a good enough reason to lose wages over.

What happens to those that are not in the union are they eligible to go on strike? if not are they held in disregard as a result of working?

The legal protection covering the right to withdraw labour over a trade dispute is not limited to union members.
The exact same protection covers non members.

Sorry but calling on my 27 years experience of industrial disputes find that impossible to believe.
Either your someone who is blessed by a almost a total dislocated blinkered existence or you really are not it touch with your work colleges at all.

No one other than perhaps a manager is going to respect you for not supporting your fellow work colleges and walking past them on a picked line. :no no

Glad to hear that.

I'm not in the union........... but I've never crossed a picket line, and have no intention of ever doing so.
I am no longer a number :-)

To be honest,we're not going to strike tomorrow, next week or even next month.
It's the same with any official strike.

You know it could happen in the next few months though,so you save for it,and if there is no strike you've got a brucie bonus.

Personally I tell my accountant, she who must be obeyed,I give her the jist of what could happen and possibly when, and we tighten our belts, job done.

With all due respect to those on this site saying or thinking they can't afford to strike in a few months time-don't talk bollox.
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Your first and only post to this forum advocates not taking strike action, and you refer to your work mates as "colleagues". Move along folks, nothing to smell here, except for that fishy pong.. :hmmmm

It's not about not supporting your fellow workers.. It's about doing what you believe is right. Seeing as I'm not a member of the union anyway, noone has pulled me to one side and given me rick solid evidence that walking out and taking unpaid leave will in anyway improve my life. Seeing as most people strike for the two reasons I said above, noone apart from the hardcore union militants really give a monkey what I do.

And if noone has noticed by now, striking doesn't really achieve anything positive.
