Letter or small packet
For years I've been exchanging farm manuals on CD by transfering the manual onto CD, placing it is a proper CD envelope enclosing a small letter that easily fits through the 5mm slot in the post office and they weigh around 36 grams, and posting it within the EU for £1.29 or elswhere for £1.88. Now I'm told that I have to send them as a small packet at a cost of £3.00 or £3.50, quite a hike. I've been in touch with customer service and asked them if I can send as a letter and they say no, it has to go as a small packet because it has a CD within it. Can anyone give me a definate answer regarding this? customer service seemed unsure. What constitutes a letter? and why can I send it as a letter in the UK but not abroad. Any help appreciated.

Re: Letter or small packet
They must have changed it then because if a personal letter has a CD with it, it used to be accepted as a letter instead of a small packet.

I don't know the reason for the change, but it might be because a CD won't go through the letter sorting machinery, so it has to be sorted manually which will cost more.

I understand your frustration but if you think that is a big price hike you wait until we get privatized next year. You would do yourself a big service by putting down your complaint on paper and sending it to your local MP. He/she has already voted (passed by majority) to allow the privatization but he may be one of the objectors and may help in the battle to keep the post public and a decent service for customers.
