This almost never happens in practice. I've heard of stories of casuals not being sent out without packets but they are very, very rare. In our office, everything goes out every day. It has to be one of the biggest bug bears of mine. I've had several people come out and ask what was I doing and invariably it is found that the doorbell is not working or they were in the garden for a moment etc. One woman, Daily Mail flapping in her hands (literally!) would not accept that I had knocked and I asked her why I would not knock if I had the package? Wouldn't it be quicker than standing and writing out a card, endorsing the packet and having to carry it around in my pouch for the rest of the loop? No answer to that one.

In fairness though, I have noted one my partners knocking very briefly and not very loudly because he was in such a rush. Just not taking care. I think that might be part of the problem. I always go for the doorbell first and listen if I can hear it. If not, then I go to try and knock. And I listen to hear any movement inside. Then again, sometimes I can't hear the doorbell (so possibly broken) and they have no knocker. If they're inside, how to get there attention? Either way, I take my time on pressing the doorbell and then knocking but others are certainly more haphazard. A quick knock and they're writing the card out. Not right but this is the fault of job and finish. However, posties just putting cards through rather than knocking is largely an urban myth IMO.

I always make sure I knock LOUD and ring the bell if there is one. Then the customer answers the door saying I frightened them with how loud I knocked :arrrghhh

As for reporting the individual for posting through without signing.. I wouldn't do that myself, but it is a little harsh to go straight to complaint - I agree that having a word with said postie is the first port of call.

so, obviously this seems highly against the rules, as the point of 'signed for' is that someone signs for it. and unless the post person met my cat just outside and he put his paw print on it, i don't believe anyone signed for it.

tomorrow i am expecting another 'signed for' delivery that will fit through the letter box. if they do not knock and throw it through the cat-flap again, i will chase them up and ask them about it. what details should i ask for to report them to.. uh, who do i report them to?

along the same lines, i have also had days where i have found a 'sorry you were out' card in the letterbox despite me waiting all day for a knock. why is one person faking a signature and dumping through the cat -flap, and another person not even bothering to knock and making me go pick it up/have it delivered the next day..
Not getting your signature is bad enough but "dumping through the cat -flap" is inexcusable.
