London Delivery Walk

Post by garchitect »

Hi everyone,

I'm doing some research on the Royal Mail for an academic project. In order to get a good sense of how the RM works, particularly on the scale of an individual postie, I wondered if I could accompany someone on their round? Just to see what it is like to deliver a round of post.

I live in Central London, so any london posties able to take a passenger on their walk? I hope this isn't a rude request.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi, you'd really need to write to either a local Delivery Office Manager or Head Office to be honest. No one on here is going to be able to give you permission to accompany them on their rounds as it's a breach in security procedures.

Also, RM have an "Educational" department who might be able to supply you with further info about RM on request. The only details I can find for them at the moment is 01795 426465 Royal Mail Education Service, Email: royalmail@edist.co.uk but I can't remember if they're the people I used to deal with when I used to do the school talks etc (it's been a while!).

They do allow schools to visit Delivery Offices (usually after the posties have all gone out on delivery) so they can see where the mail gets prepped etc, and we did have some work experience lads with us a few years back (who I had to keep pulling up for swearing in the callers office  ) so I know it's possible for you to be able to get to see the inside workings. Also, the Lenny the Letter film (whilst aimed at kids aged 4-7 years old) does give you an insight on the journey of a letter.
Does this rag smell of chloroform to you?

I don't know if I was just unlucky, but when I tried to get Work Experience at a DO or MC back in June, neither answered their phones and neither responded to 2 letters each, one of which was sent recorded.

Might be best sending to HO then to get a definitive answer. I know the work experience lads were from a local secondary school and had help from the council in finding placements. Plus our DOM knew he could palm them off on me and then onto the posties lol
