I have been having a long battle with Royal Mail which is now involving my local mp and ofcom.
This involves the Royal Mail Signed for service for valuable items sent in the post to Germany.
This does not matter what the items are, it is not specific. The Royal Mail accepts valuable items in the Signed for service to Germany (There are restrictions but I am not talking about these items). The Royal Mail specifically states that although compensation may be paid for items lost in this service, it is not an Insured service and as such if an item is prohibited by the receiving country no compensation is payable.
The problem is that in Germany there are 2 services, The GLS service which is linked to Royal Mail in some way which is like the UK Recorded Service and the DHL service which belongs to the German Post Office which is a secure service.
Royal Mail uses the cheaper GLS service which specifically prohibits valuable items which are not sent in an insured service. As the Royal Mail Signed for service is not an insured service all valuable items are prohibited by the GLS service.
Two questions
1 Why does the Royal Mail not use the Secure DHL service for delivery in Germany.
2. Why will they not list any valuable items sent in the signed for service to Germany that are not prohibited by GLS
I belive this is mis-selling.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Re: Mis-selling Royal Mail International Signed for Service
GLS is a subsidiary of the Royal Mail Group that's why they use them - they do the same in Portugal as well, and perhaps Spain. Its a business decision basically.mis-sold wrote:1 Why does the Royal Mail not use the Secure DHL service for delivery in Germany.
If I understand correctly you are asking why they don't have a list of everything valuable that can be accepted.mis-sold wrote:Why will they not list any valuable items sent in the signed for service to Germany that are not prohibited by GLS
A list of everything valuable that can be accepted would be both impractical and to be honest pointless. There are new items entering service all the time so keeping such a list would be a never ending task, and it would always be wrong. Also the term valuable is not precise as it can mean valuable in monetary terms, in historical terms, scientific, or even just a family heirloom. Most logistic firms therefore get round this problem by publishing a list of items that they cannot deliver based on safety or local laws and customs.
