Around the houses

Post by Terryk »

This is on the Royal Mail Customer Bulletin this morning
One of our vehicles transporting mail from our Swindon Mail Centre to our National Distribution Centre (NDC) in Daventry arrived late yesterday. As a result of this some mail posted in the OX, RG and SN postcodes yesterday for delivery today in the North West, Yorkshire and South East may be delayed.
I can understand mail for the North West and Yorkshire going via Daventry but what do they mean by the South East? Does all mail from the Thames Valley Mail Centre for London go via the NDC? I would have thought it would make more sense to use the M4 - especially for mail beyond London into Kent.

Or is it the case that all mail for outside RG, SN and OX goes to Daventry - even if that is the opposite direction - ie mail for the West Country or the South Coast.

I am not a MC specialist but as I understand it these DCs are at various strategic locations all over the country. So if a bulk mailer in the Swindon area sends it to that MC, then they send on to the site at Daventry as thats the plan, Daventry then process it and send it on to the feeding Mail centres for the address concerned.

There is as far as I know a few more DCs around, one is in Yorkshire so Bradford, Leeds and York would send all their stuff to that DC for processing.

London would probably do theirs through the SEDC wherever that is, or its closest one. Its not where its going, but where its from that matter with DCs.

That's one driver in for some serious mickey taking tonight then - all vehicles left on time/early so far as I'm aware so how he got lost enough to be late who knows! From the not including the NE and a good part of the Midlands I guess it wasn't massively late in, just late enough that the mail missed the connecting final departures to certain MCs.

SE shouldn't in theory be affected at all, all the mail for the SE/Londons from Swindon is sent via PRDC in the evenings. There might be one or two postcodes that technically fall under SE but that are sent on an NDC lorry, isn't massively likely but I don't have much to do with that these days so can't be sure.

Thanks adb2aber, that does make more sense. I know Royal Mail have some wierd and wonderful ways but it did seem odd to send mail in the opposite direction before it went east.

For all the complaints it gets, in my experience it is a pretty good service. I can post an item at 19:30 in Swindon and more often than not it arrives in the tip of Cornwall or the South of Scotland the next morning thanks to a lot of people working through the night.
