I'm not sure what to do about my latest problem with delivery of packages/Something For You cards.
The first time the tracking number was written down incorrectly I let it slide. Mistakes can happen.
The second time it happened (and I had no idea what the correct tracking number was as I hadn't ordered anything), I put in a complaint. More because I was concerned that I might have problems collecting the package. Anyway, the RM customer services passed it on to the local depot. A day or so later, I had a very hostile postie at my door totally losing it. Thought his eyes were going to pop out of his head. He ranted a lot, demanded the Something For You card and shouted, spit flying from his mouth, that there was no valid complaint. I have to be honest, I was quite afraid he was going to lose control and become physical. I handed over the card, told him this was between him and his manager. Since then I have been worried about retribution, but it seems like everything is getting delivered as normal (although at first I was worried that wasn't the case - I went about five days without mail). I wasn't sure whether to mention this to RM or keep my mouth shut. Well, I thought it best to keep my mouth shut as I would actually like my mail, but it doesn't seem right that he behaved the way he did.
Anyway, I've now had card number three with an incorrectly written number. I didn't even realise at first, as I only checked it after visiting the postal depot (luckily I had the correct one in an email from the company I ordered from). I waited 48 hours (no wait time was specified on the card, but usually it's 24 or 48 hours) then visited there earlier today. A very helpful chap went to find the package and after quite a while waiting I told someone else I couldn't any longer. I had a friend waiting and needed to get back to work. They went to find the chap who had gone to look for my package. He told me that it had been booked back into the depot, but couldn't find it anywhere. He took my number and a photocopy of the card. All very nice and I'm grateful he will make sure it's held for four weeks if it is found (as I mentioned I'm going abroad soon, in case it is found when I'm out of the country), but how could it go missing if the package was checked back into the depot?

Who told you it had been booked back into the depot?kurovix wrote: how could it go missing if the package was checked back into the depot?
I've worked in the callers office and all that happens is that when a recorded delivery is returned undelivered it is put on a shelf awaiting its collection by the customer or a ph.one call from the customer asking for redelivery. It may actually be there but put on the wrong shelf or not actually back at the depot yet. (too many scenarios as to why this could be, to go into here)
And no the Postie shouldn't have taken out his frustrations on you, I'm sure it was unsettling but you may just have caught him on an off day, we all have them. I'm not trying to excuse his attitude, if you feel you could talk to the guy it might be the quickest way to sort out the problems ouve been having.

Re: Don't know what to do
The employee at the depot told me that when he finally gave me the card back and explained the problem. To quote him: "I can see it was booked back in, but can't find it." When I checked the tracking number on RM's website:Sidley wrote:Who told you it had been booked back into the depot?kurovix wrote: how could it go missing if the package was checked back into the depot?

"It is being held at North Tyneside DO pending instructions from addressee."
As I work twelve hour shifts, it was simpler to collect it, so I never arranged a redelivery, but instead waited the 48 hours before going there.
I just checked http://www.royalmail.com/trackdetails" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and the last status message (day after the failed delivery attempt) was:
"Sales Order Raised"
No idea what that means. The status message 24 hours prior to that is:
"No Answer - Available for collection"
I haven't seen the postal worker since and it seems to always be someone different in our area. Well, it's in the past now, but if I ever get the chance to (can't forget his face) I'll try to speak with him.

Re: Don't know what to do
Some Delivery Offices have a fancy (sometimes computerised) system of booking in every returned packet.
It is supposed to make retrieval of said items much quicker........
Different offfices have different systems for storing items away.
In some - Special Deliveries, Recorded Deliveries and Tracked items all have a separate storage area away from "normal" packets.
Sometimes Recorded Deliveries get mixed up with Special Deliveries - especially international ones where it isn't always clear if it is a Special or an "International signed for" which is treated as a Recorded item.
If it has been put away with the wrong items it will take longer to find.
Then items are also stored according to different methods.
Alphabetical name order or street name for example.
Some people (and especially the French) insist on writing the surname first, which means sometimes items get filed away under the first name. (Names like Collins John are extremely unhelpful)
Poor, indecipherable handwriting can lead to items being incorrectly put away and I've seen items stored under the senders surname where this is written more clearly than the recipient's name and address.
If it is in their delivery office, they will find it sooner or later.

Re: Don't know what to do
Going by the parcels I received last time (from the same company), then the label is printed and I'm not French, but English, so my surname is in the correct place. In fact, another package from the same company arrived yesterday (this one wasn't track and trace, but second class), so I would expect the labels to contain the same details.
Well, I will call up on Monday before going there again.
Thanks for the responses, ladies and gentlemen.

Re: Don't know what to do
I thin to be honest that human interaction has happened again and the item has been put on the wrong shelf.
At some of the Callers Offices I know they have different areas for:
Normal Items.
Recorded Items.
Tracked Items.
Special Delivery Items.
Foreign Tracked Items.
It could also be something as simple as the postie not putting the exact details on the card to match the parcel. For instance if thy are regular and know you as "kurovix" or Mr A Smith, but the parcel has come in with the name "xurovix" or Arthur with no surname, then the helpful gent in the office will be looking for the wrong name.
It could even be that they have highlighted the parcel incorrectly in that they write the house name or number on the side of it and have written it on wrong.
I think in the end it will turn up. Sorry this is not a helpful answer but hopefully it will give you an insight into the inner workings and give you some confidence that it will reappear at some point.

Re: Don't know what to do
Hi mate,
The response is appreciated. The only thing incorrect on the card is the tracking number (I only realised when I got back to the office). My name and address are written down correctly. I tried to call and let them know (about the tracking number), but their telephony system was in out of hours mode already (although they are open until 14:00). I'll be sure to mention it when I call back, in case it helps. (Although I suspect it's something else, as it was just wrong by one digit in the middle.)
