Hi,
About 2 weeks ago the private landlord (we were taken over from the council) installed a security door to my flats. Since then volume of post has dropped. Someone sent me a recorded delivery a week ago, it never made it. I enquired and was given the ref number. I typed that into the RM page and it told me an attempted delivery had been made a week ago but the address was 'inaccessible' For that reason a card had not been left. Problem: how do you claim a parcel without a delivery card?
I went down the sorting office and basically pleaded for my parcel - in front of about 20 people queuing - very embarrassing. This nice lady on the desk eventually relented and went off to check my delivery ref number. A while later I had my parcel (relief - I feared it would be returned to sender). I then asked the lady why I had been left no card, expecting her to blame the security door? To my astonishment she replied Royal Mail aren't allowed to leave delivery cards (?for parcels) any more, because they have to make repeat attempts at delivery, therefore no delivery card. I said, how are customers supposed to know that a delivery has been attempted then? She smiled and shrugged her shoulders. I said the system has a fault in it. She smiled and processed the parcel.
So I got my parcel, but only because it was recorded delivery and I was able to track it. What happens if someone (the Bay?) sends me a parcel that isn't recorded or SD? It could end up going between the sender and the sorting office like a yo-yo and the customer none the wiser?
Please advise.
Thanks,
Ric
Ps. don't get privatised, the first thing they will do is close down this forum & set up a puppet one - just like they did to our residents association. Privatisation is rubbish.

Re: Delivery cards?
err. I can only say she's talking pants! And I've been out of RM for over a year now.
Your address was inaccessible. If they can't get access, they can't leave a card. That's the only way they shouldn't leave a card.

Re: Delivery cards?
I think there may have been a misunderstanding.
If its not possible to deliver at first attempt because the address is inaccessible (Dog Loose, Gate locked, Security Door locked etc) then 2 more attempts (so 3 in total) are usually made.
If after the 3rd attempt access is still not possible then all items are returned to sender.
If you have a new security access then it might be worth checking with the Landlord to see if Royal Mail have been informed. If possible it would help if the Postie was issued with either a pass code or a key, otherwise they should attempt to get access by "buzzing" the addresses that have mail for that day. However, buzzing to get access for some reason gets on residents nerves so is usually the last choice for a postie.

Well there's chaos. The RM (site) message said nothing about three attempts. I challenged the "inaccessible" at that site, I wrote that if my flat was inaccessible please tell me why so I can report it to the landlord. No response.
At the sorting office I picked up my (first) recorded delivery and at first the lady had told me that there was nothing there for me. Then I showed her the RM reference number - that's how I got my parcel - otherwise I would have been sent away empty handed. When I got home after the sorting office visit a postie turned up at my door with several items. I said how did you get past the security door? He said I went to the neighbourhood office and they gave me a key (electronic fob key). But when I looked through what he had delivered I found that something posted to me on May 4th was missing. I contacted the sender who quoted me the tracking number. The missing item is still at the sorting office I visited this morning! Oh my gosh what is going on here please? I do not know who to fault at the moment, the Post Office, the landlord or what?
Meanwhile yesterday in panic mode I submitted a RM 'Mail Collect' form fearing that unless I did that I might never see my mail items at all. But if the posties do have access (landlord tells us nothing) then I had better cancel that arrangement?

Re: Delivery cards?
Maybe you've just caught her on a bad day. Go collect your parcel or arrange a redelivery online. Up to you if you keep the mail collect in place. Guess I suppose it depends how easy it is for you to get to the delivery office. Of course it could be that most problems will sort themselves out now that the postie has got a key, sometimes the postie's relief cover may not take the key out with him though, which means you may on certain days get some inaccessible mail. Ofc you could have a great relief postman who remembers everything:)

Thanks Mazza,mazza111 wrote:...it could be that most problems will sort themselves out now that the postie has got a key...
Well it wasn't as bad as I thought - am getting mail through now and even the recorded items they can't find in the depot turn up on the RM tracker. Must be a pain all these security doors popping up all over the place. I don't know why they call ours secure, anyone can bell a flat to let them in, saying they're the plumber & that's that :-o
