Hi
I am working for an organisation that has a lot of recorded delivery items. They now remove the barcode sticker, put it in a book and write details of date, address etc in the book. This is time consuming and the books take up a lot of space.
Is there a system on the market which would enable the post room to scan the barcode, prefil some of the information and store it electronically?
Cheers
Kate

Re: System to log incoming recorded delivery items
A lot of Bar Code readers can read the Royal Mail ones, so all you need is a Bar Code Scanner linked to a Computer that can store the information.
Then a using a Bar Code add in for whatever word processing package the firm uses should be relative easy.
For instance:
1. TYSSO - USB Barcode Scanner Reader (Black) - Handheld USB Barcode Scanner, Reading width 8cm, for PC, Laptop http://www.amazon.co.uk/TYSSO-Barcode-S ... 397&sr=8-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2. Barcode Add-In for Microsoft Word & Excel http://www.idautomation.com/fonts/tools ... cel-addin/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I leave compatibility, costs, licence type etc to you for obvious reasons, but in essence yes its easy to do. In fact I use a bar code reader that can scan Royal Mail bar codes on my own Android Phone.

Re: System to log incoming recorded delivery items
Not sure what sort of volume you are talking about but I use an iPhone app called "Parcel". This uses the camera to read the barcode (or you can enter it manually) and works with other carriers as well as Royal Mail/Parcelforce.
It wll handle 50 items at a time and if you buy the add-on you can view these on the web and export them to Excel. Total cost would be less than £10.
I use it for both incoming and outgoing items. It also provides updates along the way as each item reaches tracking points on its journey - saves you keep looking at websites to see where an item is.

Re: System to log incoming recorded delivery items
Which Royal Mail barcode? There are several different ones:
The barcode on a Special Delivery/Recorded Signed For/Tracked/etc item?
The 2D barcode on an Online Postage/SmartStamp/etc item?
The CBC printed by the customer above/below the address on many items?
The first one can be read by pretty much any barcode program. The 2nd by any program which can handle DataMatrix codes.
The 3rd needs a program with the specific RM4SCC symbology. It looks like the fairly common ZXing barcode scanner app can't handle this - see discussion at https://groups.google.com/d/topic/zxing ... discussion. The free Accusoft Barcode Scanner can (tested on Android 2.3 just now) - see https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ient&hl=en - it reads the postcode and DPS but not the check digit from the CBC

Re: System to log incoming recorded delivery items
I wanted to scan barcodes on Special Delivery/Recorded Signed For/Tracked items.
The apps I have tried have been based on zxing on an android operating system The results have been disappointing to say the least.

ZXing can certainly read those barcodes. What do you want to do with the data once you have read it?

Re: System to log incoming recorded delivery items
In our case the sender emails us the tracking number when sending it and we use that to track it through our system. The first step is obviously to record its arrival from Royal Mail so ensuring we have received it is important to us.
