Post by worcester »

hello, wondering if some one could please help with a problem.i'll start by saying that our regular postman is fantastic, never a problem, nothing late, top guy.but when ever he has time off,we get some one who wont bring parcels out with him.allways the same bloke covering for our regular postie.every wednesday i get a parcel delivered with out fail, except when the cover postie comes round, and others in the street have also noticed this.this has happend 6 or 7 times now, sometimes the parcel hasn't turned up at all and gone missing.could some please let me know if this a common problem,or some advice on this matter.i've rang the local sorting office[worcester] about this and was told it was a coincidence.not very helpfull.

I was reluctant to go to RM customer services with my problem as it involved an x colleague. However, I contacted them via twitter and whatever has been said to postie, it's worked, problem solved. So if you can't have a quiet word with the postie in question yourself I would recommend contacting them via twitter or fill out an online complaint.

We don't know... we're an unofficial forum... Mazza's already said that if you contact RM on Twitter they're quite good at getting things resolved so why not give it a go? I'm afraid we don't have all the answers here, as much as we'd like them

You say that where your regular postie uses a van, the relief postman is using a bike. I suspect that is where your problem lies.

The use of a bike restricts the size of the packet that can be delivered by this method. A rough rule of thumb is anything shoe-box size*, or larger, will not be attempted by a bike rider. These “over-sized” packets will be put out to be covered by a van driver. This is often done on overtime during the afternoon. However, this relies upon someone being prepared to do the overtime. Quite often, people simply finish their own duties too late or are too tired to work additional overtime and these over-sized packets may get left for a day or two.
This might be what is happening in your case.

* This is very much open to interpretation depending on the Delivery Office or even the individual involved. Some offices enforce the ruling quite strictly, others don't.

There is your answer. Vans take out all parcels, posties on foot, or on a bike, hand over oversize parcels to a van driver to take out.

So, obviously, when your regular is off, the over sized parcels are going with a different van. Who knows what other duties this van driver has.

Its possible that these over sized parcels aren't going out at all, but being left for the next day. Poor management probably.

Did you ever speak to the postman in question before assuming he was lazy?

I think the rest of your problem lies there.

finaly someone picked the phone up,explained my situation and was told that postmen dont leave parcels behind, but they will have a look to see if anything was left behind anyway.no, nothing waiting to be posted.yesterday a man arrives in a van with a huge plastic box with all my parcels. 8 of them.i asked the postman the day before if i had any parcels at the sorting office, and he said no.massive coincidence?4 hours after man in van brings parcels, the cover post man knocks the door.tells me he's made a cock up and posted my mail next door, its ok though, because it was nothing important, when they wake up,they'll bring it round.this is 12 noon.no one lives nextdoor, the house has been empty for weeks.man across the road knew my old neighbour and happend to have a spare key for the door.problem solved, got my mail, and my parcels.looking foward to someones defensive comments, its never our fault.

Well it won't be will it unless we all deliver to your house - all 34659 members.

Also if you don't expect Posties to be a little defensive about colleagues, perhaps posting your question on an UNOFFICIAL site was a little naive. To be fair we are not here to sort problems out, just to provide an insight to customers and others, and where possible to give insider knowledge, advice and guidance. To sort problems out you have to go the official route, which you have done, to a successful conclusion.

Here is how it works.
The packets arrive in the Delivery Office.
The big packets are sorted into routes for drivers with vans.
The little packets are sorted into routes for walking postmen.
The walking postman will not see all of the big packets for a driver's duty, especially if it includes any large Special Deliveries or Tracked items as these are sorted separately.

When you phone up and ask if there are any packets for you, that person will only be able to check the walking postman's frame.
The driving duties would have possibly several hundred packets and if there is a backlog in the office there could be several hundred more.
It would not be feasible to check through a mountain of packets to look for yours.

So the postman hadn't left any packets behind.
It does appear there was a problem with the packet route and that backlog has now been cleared.
