Thats an assumption - - all she said was that she valued it. She may value it in the same way as you do, she may not - you have assumed the worst position. Hopefully your members - (yes its the correct term they are members of a Union and you represent them, hence they are your members) won't be prejudged by any assumptions you jump to.

So you assume because of the way you read the posts that no one else has the same ethic. I read it as people giving advice and making no judgement on the OPs reason, you have assumed that he was going to take a sickie because he had not been allowed to take leave, when in fact he mentioned this in one post, and they way I read it, it was more out of frustration than anything else. If he had any common sense he certainly would not post his actions on here and then actually do it - that way leads to dismissal and rightly so.

I hate it when people turn up to work coughing, sneezing and spreading their germs everywhere.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

You do have at least a moral obligation if you have an infectious disease to do your best not to spread it.
My son's medication lowers his immune system, even something as trivial as the flu terrifies him...and me.
Being the hero and going into work knowing you are carrying an extremely infectious disease helps no-one especially the business.

Bitchface, if you are going to quote me please do not edit my words, that's just dishonest. You fail to understand the concept of pay and terms and conditions of employment. If you had two identical jobs, one with a company sick pay plan and one without, which one would you chose?

You are assuming that we are all shirkers because we value the conditions of our employment. I can assure you that most people are not as you say. On one hand you are saying your coworkers pull together and help each other out but then say that they are always off sick. And please don't assume that I am lazy because I work in an office because I am not.

You seem to be quite ignorant of the world around you. Royal Mail, being the large employer it is, has employees with every type of illness and disability you can think of. Having odd days sick here and there is really small potatoes when compared to some of these sad cases. You are always going to get people abusing the system, but I'd rather have it that way so that we are all covered.

How would YOU manage YOUR sick pay system. Would it be based on favouritism? Or just your own opinion? That would be a Great Place To Work. Based on your opinion of women, I'm guessing it would a world fraught with discrimination and unfairness.

I'm guessing you are one of those people who always doubts the genuiness of an illness, I am not. That probably says more about your mindset than anyone else's.

A few years ago I had to have radium treatment which meant I was radioactive for a couple of weeks, so much so, that I was unable to be in close proximity to others, including my family. I was forced to take 2 weeks off because if a woman in the office was pregnant then there was a risk of my condition affecting her. Now if bitchface was to have his way I wouldn't have been paid for those two weeks even though I had a letter from some professor or other stating the reasons for my enforced absence. I felt perfectly OK, there was nothing wrong with me I just wasn't permitted to work. Maybe I should have taken a fortnights holiday..............perhaps bitchface would like to suggest that to his new flock..don't go sick guys and gals take a holiday.

When I joined Royal Mail many years ago I understo The idea that you would like to take them away from us is effectively a pay-cut in my eyesod my pay conditions and one of the reasons I joined was because of the good sick pay and maternity entitlements. This is not because I wanted to abuse them (I have a very good sick record) but because I value them as part of my pay package..

could not have said it better myself.you donot see it as a valuble life line that if you ever became seriously ill you could rest easy in the knowledge that you could still put food on the table and a roof over your head.(at the companies=taxpayers=my expense) you see it as part of your wages, there to be used when ever you wish.

Lapsing should only be done if you can do it in your duty time, you would therefore not be fooking anyone off and by going into work you would spread the infection and more people would be off "taking the p**s"

maybe its just a completly differant working ethos to some of you guys.

Please bitchface get a grip - or at least start to read the agreements and get management to apply them correctly - you would be a good rep then

Of course we do and no one disputes that either in this thread or any other.

Of course he said that, any manager would but it does not mean that the agreement on lapsing does not apply just because he said so - Managers instructions are not the words of God and they can be questioned.

What everyone should understand is that your manager left out the bit he did not want to mention, and that you as a rep should advise your members -----" if time within your working hours permits." If they have time to lapse then they should lapse, if they don't then don't. I have never been forced to lapse ever, if I can justify my estimation that it would take me over my duty time.
bitchface wrote:no everybody was pissed right off.
Of course they are no-one wants to take on more work, its human nature from the Postie out in all weathers to the Manager updating his facebook status, but if the anger is aimed at the "regular sickie" then thats wrong it should be aimed at management. Why because either management are failing in their duties by not tackling a regular "sickie" who goes sick on a regular basis without due course, or the "sickie" has a genuine case and quite rightly the other posties won't be told the reasons.

Therefore everyone should treat all sickness as genuine and leave management to manage it as they are the only ones in full possession of the facts of each case. Anyone who listens to rumours, half truths and back biting about "sickies" either needs to get a life, or perhaps look on their own records from the viewpoint of a third person, they may surprise themselves.

As i read it ,the bitch is not a union rep yet,so why would he have read the agreements.is it your contention that we all waste our time reading everything that eminates from the cwu and royal mail?
They/we pay the union money to provide us with representation .They/we expect them to read it and advise them/us accordingly.

Clearly, there office should be due a rebate

No they didn't drag me off the street but there wasn't a choice and the two weeks pay? - would have made no difference to my lifestyle whatsoever. In fairness though I wasn't aware of the restrictions until I had the treatment.

2 Reasons

1. Royal Mail and The CWU came to an agreement and its a benefit of our contract of employment. If they want to discuss giving up this part then they will probably have to make some concessions elsewhere.

2. The other reason is probably cost - on balance its probably cheaper to Ill Health retire people on agreed benefits than outright dismissing them and the associated costs of ETs, medical evaluation etc

http://www.personneltoday.com/articles/ ... ement.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
An employer should take reasonable steps before dismissing an employee on long-term sick leave, including consulting with the employee, seeking up-to-date medical evidence, and considering alternative employment.

Where the employer provides an ill-health retirement or similar benefit, it should also take reasonable steps to ascertain whether an employee on long-term sick leave is entitled to that benefit. Reasonable steps include seeking medical advice on the question of entitlement.

A failure to consider an employee's entitlements on termination for long-term sickness could result in an unfair dismissal. To avoid this, employers should put in place a proper system for the management of long-term sickness absence to ensure that all the necessary steps are taken before dismissal.

When i took this job i gave no thought what so ever to the benifits package.be it sick pay /holiday or even hourly pay.the only thing that i percieved to be of utmost importance was job security and the pension .how wrong was ion the first one ?

where can we find a comprehensive list of our benifits package?

After trolling this site for many a year now with lots of differant names (as you all know)i have learnt a great deal more about the job than i would ever have been told in my unit.this is obviously wrong and the fault of the union and royal mail.

My unit never even knew didnt have to deliver mailsort on a saturday until i read it here, had never heard of a pouching off allowance, never claimed travel when sent to our"sister" do.

why or is there not a place that lists everything a delivery postperson can claim,a driver ,payrole etc can claim for.etc?

such a valuable site unfortunatly infested by daily mirror readers
