Breaks/ cutting off

Post by rockypostie »

I have heard that a postie has been sacked because he cut off at 1:20,and his duty didn't finish till 2. But he hadn't had his break,so he didn't finish early he was just having his break at the end. I know ppl should have there break before they go out,but many have them at the end. Just wondering when ppl cut off at your places do they do it with having their break at the end? So finishing before their duty finish time?

the trouble is with Royal Mail is the fact that Dom's don't know their arse from their elbow reguarding the Rule Book.

one dom will do something that another dom would not even think of doing.

its about time RM set out a rule book for ALL MANAGERS to adhere to so things like the above dont happen anymore.

how difficult can it be really?

Meal breaks at our office are 09.20 -10.00 for walkers
10.00 - 10.40 for drivers
If you dont take a break between these times then its your problem, any one who cuts off works untill 14.00.

It's a complete and utter shambles, some people at my DO don't even come back to the DO when they finish their duties, they go straight home, surely it should be if one has to come back then all should have to come back?

As for a bloke getting the sack, if that's true then the rep is a complete and utter idiot, and rep worth his salt would have fought that and easily won????

Unfortunately they have left themselves open by finishing early, although a sackable offence?? :hmmmm May satnd a chance at appeal.
Golden rule, if you cut off you must come back on your finish time and take your break properly not at the end of duty. Give them no ammo!!

So why do the signing on sheets ask whether you have taken your meal break or not in the end column?

What is the point of having your break before you go out ? OK maybe works for F/T staff (who've already done x hours before going out) - but for a P/T person it's just stupid - I tend to have a couple of "fag breaks" whilst on the road (believe even that contravenes "regulations" which state break must be taken all at one go - ridiculous) - probably the wrong time of year to argue this point, but when the sun is belting down (mad dogs and Postman etc etc) you need a break (or two) to rest/re-hydrate etc.
"We're under model" - oh no we're not - stick your lapse elsewhere ...

Rest breaks at work

A worker is entitled to an uninterrupted break of 20 minutes when daily working time is more than six hours. It should be a break in working time and should not be taken either at the start, or at the end, of a working day.

Managers breaking law i think, you cannot take your break at start or end of delivery! (working time directive web site, also on direct gov if you google it)

Rest breaks - a break during your working day

As an adult worker (over 18), you will normally have the right to a 20 minute rest break if you are expected to work more than six hours at a stretch.

A lunch or coffee break can count as your rest break. Additional breaks might be given by your contract of employment. There is no statutory right to 'smoking breaks'.

The requirements are:

•the break must be in one block

•it cannot be taken off one end of the working day - it must be somewhere in the middle

•you are allowed to spend it away from the place on your employer's premises where you work

•your employer can say when the break must be taken, as long as it meets these conditions

Does this mean that, as the RM break is 40 minutes for FT, that you could legally take the 20 minut (legally required break in the middle of the day, then the extra 20 mins provided by RM at the end or beginning or whenever you want really?

Yes.
That's why the way forward gives the option of 40 or 20/20....but if you decide to take the 40mins all in one go it has to be on or near the middle of your working day.
You cannot tag the whole 40mins on the end.

Attendance length............total breaks..... probable pattern

Less than 2 hours 30 minutes none (a 10 min grace break should be provided if work permits)
2 hours 30 to 3 hours................10 mins.................. 10
3 hours 1 to 3 hours 30..... .......15 mins....................15
3 hours 31 to 4 hours 59..... .......20 mins.................. 20
5 hours to 7 hours................... 30 mins...................30
7 hours 1 to 8 hours 59..... .......40 mins..............40 or 20 + 20
9 hours to 10 hours 59...............50 mins................30 + 20
11 hours to 12 hours 59..... .......60 mins............. 40 + 20 or 30 + 30
13 hours or longer..... ..............70 mins..................40 + 30

i can confirm this is true as this person has just had there appeal by hr and the dismissal has been upheld

the charges were

1/ wilfull delay of the mail (brought packets back)

2/ theft of royal mail time (cutting off at 120 instead of 1400)

remember people

the finish time is this case was 1400, and in that time you had to take your break,

if you did not then you are at fault

you get paid for the breaks so take them

is finishing early to watch daytime tv realy worth it

You should have an office workplan, when breaks should be taken ect.
Too many times full timers have been replaced by part timers and plans not been revisited.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Packets don't have to be deliverd every day

may i ask why not, if the packet comes in that day, it goes out that day or royal mail is guilty of willfull delay
