It doesn't work.
This is true as evidenced by the survey over on the 'Stop Junk Mail' site: http://www.stopjunkmail.org.uk/features ... efault.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

IIRC the opt outs in our office are usually listed in the Walk Log. Reserves and others on walks are hardly likely to check through these for the (probable) 1 or 2 opts outs at most. So the D2D goes to every address. Even some regulars don't bother or simply forget. The exceptions I've seen to this is one walk which has a card in with the redirections. So if you've got one in there for that address, you can then take it out. It is also written on the frame itself under the delivery point number. I'm nearly certain the person in question complained and complained to get this done as I've never seen any other walk with deals with opt-outs like this.
You must understand that I am here purely as A BEARER OF MESSAGES.

I've had 2 D2D's in the last month. Nothing AGAIN this week. Bout to take a fortnights leave which will see me still getting the supplement. So for 6 weeks supplement of what £120? I've done 2 D2D.

Since P&L I have grown to love d2ds. They now take up Royal Mails time and not my own time as I work to my time everyday anyway. I actually get quiet annoyed if a manager suggests I leave my d2ds behing one day.

The whole opt-out system is a complete waste of time. Leaflet delivery is hardly the most regulated industry.

A takeaway owner giving their kids a few quid to run around an estate for a couple of hours delivering leaflets isn't going to be receiving opt-out information. And there's a lot of "professional" leaflet distribution companies who aren't going to be getting this info.

It's a national system of regulation being applied to an industry which is often working at local level. A local firm advertising using a local printer and then either delivering the stuff themselves or getting a local (wo)man & van setup.

we have blue sticky dots on our rack for those that have opted out so its easy to see which slots not to put the "junk mail" in

I thought Royal Mail was in effect owned by the government. Therefore, what the hell are the government doing sanctioning the spamming of every British tax paying citizens door with crap that they do not want. Surely a post mans job is to deliver the mail to the public, not spam them with adverts.

You do realise that the British government (and all the major political parties) have used RM's Door to Door service (or it's election time equivalent) in the past don't you? :chuckle Also, D2D is mail. It's just a cheaper method of mailing than DSA, 1st or 2nd or Mailsort.

Door To Door is a very important resource to RM and without it there would be even more cuts being made into the service. I don't know how long you've worked for RM Shana but I'm pretty sure that if you got the job in the last 5 years then that job was only there thanks in a large part to D2D - one of the few profitable mail streams still available to RM in the days of DSA, severe regulation and being the only mail carrier with a universal service obligation.

I deliver on a P&L round with approx 1300 calls, all detached or semi-detached, all with driveways and it's very, very heavy. This week I've got 5 sets of D2D's. Is it a pain in the arse? Yes. But would I rather have a job with D2D every week or no job at all?

Yes I am, thanks for still being interested. six hours working on the post then six hours working on my thesis every night. I'll be finished pretty soon at this rate, I hope I finish before the winter, as I don't fancy being a postie that time of year, freezing my nuts off every day.

Would the cuts be really that bad if d2d went ? I mean presumably you still need posties to deliver the mail if d2d were not there. Is this 'd2d is needed to keep you in a job' actually true or just some rhetoric that managers tell you to justify them.

And yes I know governments use these to electioneer, but doing it for adverts for ASDA etc etc, its a complete waste of time, paper, and my energy.

People want their postman to deliver their mail not random adverts.

As far as rhetoric goes it used to be that RM would undersell the profits made on D2D - that was when we had a fixed sum per item for delivering them and RM always wanted to keep that figure as low as possible. D2D's certainly generate a significant proportion of revenue which is used to supplement the costs of carrying the more relevant mail - such as a stamped 1st class letter which can often be carried at a loss. In any business doing something that helps turn a profit is far from wasteful.

And as far as "random" goes - a lot of companies target their D2D's at specific areas in order to maximise response. Also, companies have been using this method for years and years. They'd soon have stopped if it didn't generate customer response - so there must be some customers who end up using information from some of the D2D's.

There's also plenty of "random" mailings made using DSA, Mailsort and 2nd class - the only difference being that the company sending them out has bought a mailing list and stuck an address on the front - do you also consider that to be a waste of time delivering?

Yes I would consider it a waste of time delivering, just as I think its a waste of time reading it when i get it myself. How come governments try to shut down the big spam syndicates of the world, yet think its ok to let their own postal service do exactly the same thing, except that paper spam has a larger negative effect on the environment with the amount of paper wasted.
Anyway if the population were polled, I would hazard a guess that 99% would say ban the d2d along with any other spam mail.
