THe Royal Mail has announced major changes to services in the Kingdom.

The delivery office on Burntisland High Street, which serves people living in the KY3 postcode area, is to relocate to the Kirkcaldy Delivery Office in Forth Avenue Industrial Estate.

The changes, which began this week, include extended opening hours for those wishing to collect parcels or packages.

Alan Gairns, director of collection and delivery for Scotland, said: “The Kirkcaldy premises provide a modern and spacious environment with improved facilities for customers and employees.

“Sorting equipment on site will help us to deliver better customer service and is part of a £1.13m investment plan for our operations in the KY area.”

Burntisland and Kinghorn residents will now be able to make collections when a “while you were out” card has been left by the postman at Burntisland Post Office branch.

Cautious welcome

The move has received a cautious welcome with local councillor Susan Leslie calling the changes “sensible” - but stressing that the needs of locals must come first.

She said: “The Royal Mail will need to clearly communicate with local residents about the changes, and the new procedures that are being put in place, as confusion and lack of clarity helps no one.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said that it will carry out a major information campaign across the KY3 postcode area.

He said: “Every customer will receive a leaflet through their door from July 11 explaining the changes and setting out the opening times of the office.

“Posters will also be displayed at Burntisland Delivery Office and Burntisland, Aberdour and Kinghorn Post Office branches informing customers of the move.”

Better service

Alex MacDonald, chairman of Burntisland Community Council said: “The Royal Mail seem to be genuinely offering a better service to local people and at the same time strengthening the local Post Office.

“However, the delivery office is located in a sensitive area of the High Street and we will take a keen interest in decisions about its future use and which have not so far been disclosed.”
