Wildcat strikes break out at Liverpool

Post by fishtank »

WILDCAT strikes broke out at a Liverpool Royal Mail depots today after six postal workers were sacked.

Up to 200 staff downed tools and launched the unofficial industrial action at the Sandhills depot, in Kirkdale, and Brunswick depot, city centre, at around 8am today. Union officials said the staff were dismissed after they allegedly refused to operate new sorting machinery brought in after the closure of the Copperas Hill office.

But the union said it had since heard the staff had not refused to operate the system.

PCS :left: spokesman Mark Walsh said: "Six of our members were sacked over the weekend and their colleagues are not happy about it. We hope we can get this situation resolved and get people back to work today."

A spokesman for Royal Mail confirmed unofficial action had broken out at the two depots.

I completely agree but in the case of unofficial action the union has a duty to be seen to try to find a solution as quickly as possible...if you know what i mean.

The union should not tell me to go back to work when i'm standing outside...if it's worried about it's assets and fines then there acting like a private company protecting itself and not it's mebers.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I don't doubt that to a certain extent the union is covering it's own ass but it is also trying to protect you.
Unofficial industrial action does not offer the same protection from dismissal as official action.

When you find yourself in the position of loosing your assets..weeks wages and other offices in your area working while you stand up for yourself ..it makes it hard for me to accept wildcat action now!

About as real as it gets for FFS. Unofficial Action is illegal and if the Union is seen as "supporting" it then RM can take them to court. Also if they "the UNION" don't tell you that the action is illegal/unofficial then they are breaking the law. THEY HAVE TO TELL YOU in other words.
In order to avoid liability in this way, the principal executive committee, president or general secretary of the union must repudiate the act as soon as reasonably practicable after it has come to the knowledge of any of them, and the union must, without delay:

I of course wish Wildcat action was not illegal but since Thatcher came to power the Unions have many hoops to jump through and they must do so. After all their hard choice is to protect the rights of the members not on unofficial strike, or those that do. Its a tough choice and I am glad I don't have to make it. I also think that because you can loose your job over it then individuals should be allowed to make their own minds up.

However, I do support your stance and hope that there is a speedy and fair resolution.

You do what your conscience tells you to do.
The union is there to make you fully aware of the possible consequences...that's all.

Dont you read the replies:

THE UNION CANNOT LEGALLY BACK A WILD CAT ACTION .

The choice has to be up to individuals you have to make the choice. If I was there, I would be on the gate.

If you don't support the strike then cross the line if you want. If you do support the cause then you have to accept the consequences of your action. Once of those consequences is that the Union cannot "be seen" to be backing you. Please read the "hidden" message.
