I suggest you make a formal complaint using the details provided on the Royal Mail website. Anyone who is opening your mail is liable to be sacked on the spot so further comment on an open forum is not a good idea. The mail could be being opened long before your postman gets hold of it.

I'm delivering about 5 open items per day at the moment (which I notice are open). Christmas cards are the worst, especially because there are so many that they often tear each other suring the sorting process.

Still, 5 for one address does seem a little excessive. Either he is opening just your letters or he is opening 500 letters per day so neither really makes sense. Perhaps you get more cards than most people and once noticing something open, you can't help but check for it next time.

Hi Lynda,

If it's Christmas cards that are open, then there's a good chance that they have come open during their run through the sorting machine (I'd say I have to deliver between 5-20 cards a day like that) as a result of the poor quality gum they use on the envelopes - it quite literally isn't worth spit. If it's other mail as well, though, it would seem a little more sinister, but I doubt it would be your postman who is fault, unless he's a complete idiot as he would know that the finger of suspicion would be pointing at him.

Please go easy on your postie as its probably not his fault! I personally come across a lot of xmas cards that havnt been sealed properly and come undone when they go through the sorting process. Cheap gum is often the culprit but also see a lot of cards that havnt been stuck down properly by customers. But if there is anything missing from the cards make sure you give customer services a ring and report it!

we`ve had the sequencing machines for approx 6 weeks now and it`s noticeable that more mail is ripped open with these than the previous sorting machines.I pointed this out to a manager who just shrugged and walked off.

There is probably not a postie in the business that has never come across xmas cards or packets which are open.
A mixture of cheap cards and envelopes and bad wrapping is usually the reason.

 Just received a parcel resealed by the post office. Perfect knife cut taped over with post office tape. Expensive stuff gone, cheap stuff still there. My dad was high up in the post office ( I am going back some 30 to forty years). I remember him saying ' If a letter goes missing or is opened there is an investigation. What the hell happened.

May I suggest that using the official channels means you are more likely to get an investigation started. Royal Mail Chat is a forum for workers, not an official website for Royal Mail, and as such, we can't investigate allegations of theft.,

I just had a weird one. I'd ordered a kit to do with sexual health from an online pharmacy (hey, we all need a check-up from time-to-time) and they sent it out via Royal Mail. It arrives in a brown box which has folded tabs at either end to keep it sealed.

So the door is knocked, and I run downstairs. Postwoman hands it to me and straight away asks "What's in there?" before going into her line of reasoning "... I hope you don't mind, but it's very light and I've seen a few like this and I was wondering..." I very much did mind, but being a polite person I just muttered something about some medication.

So I sign for the package and take it into the house and go to open in, and one of the side tabs had been bent far back enough that it'd ripped part of the package. With a little jostling and shaking I was very easily able to see a glimpse of the box inside the package. I mean, one of the above happening, fair enough, but both on the same package? Surely I'm not being paranoid here?

I don't really have any interest in a formal complaint since it's not exactly something I wanna lodge in the official channels, but WTF people?

both parts of your suspicion may well be totally innocent.
But I do understand your concerns.

As a fellow postie I often wonder and harmlessly make assumptions of what's inside by feel. Maybe curiosity got the better of her and used it as a quick conversation starter. Who knows ?

The second part with damage could happen anywhere in the business pipeline as it is handled numerous times before the postie recieves it so may well just be a coincidence and happened during transit, hard to tell without seeing the type of package in question.

Overall you would have to ask yourself what would one get out of peeking into a package, delivering it and then asking you what is inside?!

regards
