I thought that the buyer would need to sign for it when it's returned, have always got a signature for returned recordeds.

It could also just not have been scanned as delivered yet. I was scanning the delivery cards the other day and found a pile of them from one postie. 4 weeks of delivery cards he handed in all on one go 
How that is not picked up on is bonkers. Sometimes they've been through washing machines before they are scanned too
