I prefer these but they don't last long.

In keeping with the new spirit of respect that RM is intent upon showing its employees
(and following successful trials with Bertram Mills)
they are happy to launch a new range of footwear

Tried to order a new pair of shoes today and told that we are only entitled to one pair a year now. Anyone else had this?

Why do I have to wear the Magnums instead of my Adidas trainers? (change brand to whatever's in if they're just so last year!)

Before you go down the Safety PPE route, my last box distinctly stated, RM Magnum Viper Low (Delivery Shoe) Non Safety. (Note the last two words.)

Himaggen, I guess that "non-safety" means that they're not steel toe-capped. Steelies are not required work wear if you're working on delivery.

Straight4ward, I think that you're kind of part of the way there!

In order to be sure we are being supplied with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, Royal Mail would need to ensure that the footwear is tested to a set of standards. My suggestion would of course be that those standards are BS EN ISO 20344:2004.

If you were sad enough to look into this set of standards, you'd see that there are three main categories of footwear within that each tested according to its own particular standards. They are
  • EN ISO 20345:2004 (A1:2007) for safety footwear
  • EN ISO 20346:2004 (A1:2007) for protective footwear
  • EN ISO 20347:2004 (A1:2007) for occupational footwear
In the case of the Magnums above, I'm assuming that they must be tested as either protective or occupational footwear

Additionally, and most importantly for us, Royal Mail's footwear manufacturers have to prove slip resistance performance through testing. This is normally done using another European standard, namely EN ISO 13287:2007

Take a look at your footwear, if they are not tested to the appropriate standards, they cannot be enforced as suitable footwear and also anyone having had any accident and been denied appropriate representation as a result has been dealt an injustice.

Why should we have to wear uncomfortable and unsafe/untested footwear when we can wear our own comfortable ones with the same lack of testing!
