Local Post Offices - How can we help keep them open?
..... Or is it already a lost cause. I live on a narrowboat, and try to find and use tiny local P O whenever possible. I sell books on eBay, so send a few items a week this way. Does it really help? (use it or lose it?) or not?
While I'm asking, I'm getting the feeling posties don't like eBayers. Why's that, or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

We all must do what we can to keep our local p.o. open trouble is R/M will use every argument they can to shut most of them down,a couple of years ago the p/o near me was under threat, petitions were signed, local MPS got involved but to no avail and in the end it closed down, but there have been cases where this has worked and R/M have had to back down so its always worth having a go and yes use it or loose it is a good shout to help keeping them open.Bernie wrote:..... Thank you Bernie! keep your flag up for sure. I too love the ebayers and the QVCers, they keep us in business! I deliver to a canal stop on the kennet/Avon and appreciate the amount of post destined for the narrow-boaters. last week an agency postie tried to do the delivery and couldn't find the site! Thankfully I explained and all was forgiven but it proves you just can't beat local knowledge!Bernie wrote:Thanks John. I'll keep on flying the flag wherever I can. I've signed petitions whenever I've come across one. I really can't think of anything else to do, but I'd hate for all these tiny places to close down!
Cheers, tinydancer x

Hi Bernie, I'm afraid if you hear us griping about E-bayers its just a bit of banter. E-Bay is certainly helping Royal Mail and us so keep on trucking.

Missus loves eBay,and made tons of spondoolies selling kack on there, the things people buy!!
And i've had many a takeaway on the profits
Posties hate it,as you can imagine, all them bloody packets
Seriously though, makes the business money which is good, and some serious bargins to be got on there.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

That's a great idea! Wish I'd thought of it myselfROCKY wrote:when you are in these p/o and you think to yourself i wonder if they do ?????,if they dont suggest it these places need a greater income to survive, they need to offer more than rm can provide them with to make them successfull, they will not close money makers only those that tend to run at a loss
Thanks for the support for eBayers, I feel a lot more relaxed in here now!

Re: Local Post Offices - How can we help keep them open?
- It's a long walk into town , the queues so keep em open , i'm a postie but I need stuff scanning to go on web sites , kit off E-bay so it keeps the local subbies open. Bid and paid for something on sunday, arrived 1C recorded tuesday . The Specials prices are reasonable £7.75 up to 2kg with one off media.johnnypick wrote:We all must do what we can to keep our local p.o. open trouble is R/M will use every argument they can to shut most of them down,a couple of years ago the p/o near me was under threat, petitions were signed, local MPS got involved but to no avail and in the end it closed down, but there have been cases where this has worked and R/M have had to back down so its always worth having a go and yes use it or loose it is a good shout to help keeping them open.Bernie wrote:..... Probably got the wrong end of the stick - all of my children have been both buyers and sellers on E Bay and I am a postman and have never noticed any animosity towards ebayers. If I had a criticism it would be that they don't always pack things that well - but hey they aren't alone in that.
Whats it like living on a narrow boat? I almost bought one when I left the forces for £2000 ready to go - but that was in the early 70s. I live by a canal and take my dog along the towpath and live only a mile or two from a marina so it would be pointless booking a canal holiday - it would probably take a couple of days just to get to where I live!

Hey dvbuk55, OK, I guess I definitely got the wrong end of the stick!! Good-natured joshing eh?!
It's great living on a narrowboat, bit cold in the winter, but fantastic in summer. 2000 ready to go was a bargain even then I shoulld think, ours cost enough so we had to sell the house to buy it, so we HAVE to live on it
Which canal do you live by, which marina? We'd like to live out on the canal all the time, but I haven't yet hardened myself to doing without electricity for extra heat in the winter.
