Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate. sometimes doing the right thing is the best thing and sometimes you have to draw a line in the sand.
Quite right about the company being blind to the potential of the market out there.Population is growing rapidly, more houses being built, more delivery points/customers.Internet in more and more homes, with greater numbers being convinced about the security of shopping online. There is a shed load of money waiting to be made. This christmas the packets are going to go through the roof.
This recession was the perfect time to really put the squeeze on our competitors, undercut them and win back more custom. Did we do it. Fat chance, lets screw the front line staff, make their rounds unworkable and throw in a bit of absorbtion too, all while giving management a nice bonus to wield the axe as they drag the company down.

i suspect that that type of innovative approach to gaining business would fall foul of Postcon's regulations and any money we would make from the extra business would be lost in fines - going into the coffers of the very government that is determined to see us toe the line! :d'oh!

Nothing innovative about attitude and pride in what you do, except where these words meant nothing to an individual in the first place.

It would help if once and for all, work loads between jobs had parity. I know with the best will in the world you won't get it so that all jobs are identical in terms of delivery time, but at the moment the differences are ridiculous. I work in an office which has several units covering the whole of the city, and some rurals. In my unit, all four driving jobs are as equal as can be. Obviously there will be daily differences, but on the whole, we all work up to - and sometimes over our time. Yet drivers from other units can make up to two or three hours a day. A total and utter piss take when we are all paid the same. And there are some foot deliveries in my unit easily making an our or two most days.

Yet management insists all jobs are equal. I have no problem whatsoever with working the hours I'm paid for. I just wish it applied to everyone!

PJ long winded utterly misguided and out of touch.
we could all work harder to save our jobs as you call it, but havent we all worked harder in recent years to find that effort
is rewarded by bigger rounds and lapsing?
The profits made by our extra efficiency are squandered by crazy RM spending we have all seen how they can find money to draft in
part timers from other areas petrol /overtime no object.and im not talking about strike periods.
also (bonus culture) the DSA agreement etc.
i started of as very hard working and conscientious and still am! but realize i will make myself ill struggling to achieve the unachievable and rm wont even notice.
the message is look after yourself first.
its not selfish!
Only by ensuring your workload is capped at a reasonable level can you look after your health
and thus ensure that you will even last in the job.
You can carry on with you patriotic flag waving and best foot forward into a glorious tomorrow rhetoric!
RM will love you and you can be their poster boy. .
They will still s**t on you though.
get tough,get real.
Try to do your job no more no less.
Keep pushing for change.
I'm a postman-and i know where you live.....

As a postie, all I can do is deliver mail, and as much as I am able. I have my own ideas as to how I might improve my day-to-day tasks and find new roads to small efficiency improvements, but really I am not paid to make decisions of any greater importance. However, the job of a postie is very important, hell the whole business should be geared to making the job as efficient and effective as it can be - our job should lead the market and put the rest of the couriers to shame.

I see that like me, there are just so many other frustrated posties out there. But we all need to pull together and never lose sight of the fact that we are a team. Somehow I think that the pressure is getting to RM, because things have just fallen apart and a 'let's do' culture has been invaded by a 'blame' culture, where ultimatums rather than agreements are the order of the day.

There's no need to read these posts of mine, because they are not intended to get us any further forward, not intended to deal with specific matters pertinent to our day job, but rather to drag some weary eyes back from the brink in order to at least acknowledge that there is always a fresh perspective to be had, no matter how far down the road to disaster a situation may have dragged us.

I have been asked why I keep 'pledging my support' to ACAS, well that's because I prefer to search for solutions than find problems. I'd rather be a part of the solution than part of the problem, and as with ACAS, I can't avoid seeing both sides of the argument.

The next step after going on strike, I guess, is to quit all-together, and I see that there is indeed a thread on here that has chosen 'Quit' as its title. You won't find me in that dark place. Hope comes from within, and I admit that perhaps my vision is impaired by sheer hope, I don't see the point in debating around the issue that plainly there IS an elephant in the room. Things may seem to have gone back to normal, but clearly although we have all gone back to work (because the union can't make up its mind) many posties after putting so much on the (picket) line feel a sense of regret and would perhaps prefer to have achieved more through industrial action.

With so much feeling bubbling under the surface, and mouths taped shut rather than voluntarily, this period of calm is anything but really, and is being held together with a few stamps and a shred of common sense. Yet, when those that matter get back around the table (hopefully ashamed of their behaviour that led to the stand-off), they will have to LEAD by example and try something different that might work, for all our sakes.

As humble posties, why don't we provide the answers for those that matter, why not let this here board be the canvas on which our masters dual? Let's lead from the bottom if there aint any leadership coming our way. Let's turn Royal Fail into Never Fail. Let's put this board back in the news for the right reasons this time. Let's heap even more shame on our so-called leaders who threw us out onto the street only to let us back in after they had spent their budget on take-away pizza.

Let's turn things around and start right here. There's no time like the present. We'll find a way.

Sure we can.

When I come up on the lottery, can I have you and PeedmyPants as my butler and chauffeur? Oh, please say you both will, as I want to make absolutely sure that I'll have two quaintly old-fashioned, know their place types, really busting their balls for the £5 an hour I'll be paying you, because you'll both be ever so glad that you at least have a job. If not, I'll have to hire decent people, and pay them a decent wage, damn-it. :Very Happy

Exactly! And Night Tonic, what's this about the bare minimum? - can you elaborate? Or will you once again make a jibing statement with no foundation and leave the thread?

And that, my friends, takes great technique
With shoes that barely last a week

Has got all wet like a soggy bun

My bladders bursting for a pee
I'll ask advice from the RMC...?
RMC do squarely say,"piss yourself and carry on,
It's the Big book of Al's we all read from"

Done me recordeds, specials, packets, door-to-doors
Best rush back to do a half hour more
Because the DOM say's I'm taking too long
The walk, he mutters, I must be doing all wrong
Oh it's not wrong- hand me a docket
It's off your bonus and in my pocket

Managers to strike is the tale
In reality, Primark have a sale
Beware this weekend, there's gonna be a gale
And a good result today, by the Dale
Those cut price pensions, proposed by satan
We'll fight against, so FECK OFF LEIGHTON

To feck him off would cause much glee
With lil Ad tied to a tree
Heavier bags and falling mail
Somethings wrong with Royal fail
New start time baloney and inward preps
Pray god our union protect our reps
For if they don't, then our leader Ward
Should fall heavily, on his sword

24hr contracts make them all flock
Why has this job gone all to cock
To cock, you say? I must agree
We flog our guts for Queen and country
So Al and Ad, must understand
We'll FIGHT them both, across the land

£400 bonus in our grasp
And 50/50 share i hear you all gasp
All you need to do is hours for them save
While you and your mates head towards an early grave
Were not dead yet, up goes a sigh.
FOR RMC OUR BATTLE CRY!!!!
Couldn't resist digging up this old post from LTOMMO,god only knows what he'd have made of this thread

You're missing the point with your innane corporate drivel.

Let me explain this - it's not difficult to comprehend.
I WORK VERY, VERY HARD FOR ROYAL MAIL

There are not enough "paid" hours in the day to do anymore work.

My knees ache, my back aches yet I'm physically fit and only turned 40 a few weeks ago.

Therefore I refuse to work any harder for my general health and wellbeing.
I also work for a company that seem to have utter contempt for their workforce.

Maybe you work in an office that have it relatively easy still ( it won't last), or you just have so little respect for yourself.

As for TNT and their tacky corporate slogan you seem to love so much - I don't see any TNT employees struggling up a hill on a rusty old bike with a 16+ kilo bag wobbling on the front - do you?

I didn't read anymore of the post.

C,mon ACAS!

Assuming we all have a miraculous Damascene conversion and adopt and achieve Peejay's vision of a competitive Royal Mail surely the Regulator would then have to additionally handicap Royal Mail in order to break its' monopoly position? All this talk of modernisation is no more than management setting up Royal Mail for a sell-off.Anyone who doesnt realise this is living in cloud-cuckoo land in my opinion.

personally at our office it isn't a case of "doing the bare minimum" its a case of the work load being to great to complete consistently without personal injury no matter how hard we try.
