I couldn't tell you the formula but I had buy down last year.
It amounted to more than I would have earned if I worked full time for two years. After 2 years you could return to full time without prejudice - if of course there are any ful time vacancies then.
Having said that if I had not been 59+ and can draw a pension then I would have had serious misgivings.
