Blowing Away The 10% Traffic Volume Myth

Have a look at these stats and use them in any WTLL or discussions you may have with any doubters.

In their submission to the Hooper report Royal Mail claimed they had 229,000 employees in 2002. By the same measure, this had fallen to 178,430 in 2009. This is a loss of over 50,000 and constitutes a 22% decline.

In its 2002 annual report and accounts Royal Mail reported it was delivering 81m letters a day. In its 2009 Report and Accounts it said it was delivering 75 million letters a day. This is a decline of 7.4%.

So in the last 7 years staffing levels have fallen 22% while the number of items Royal Mail reports it delivers every day has fallen by only 7.4%

RM constantly claim a 10% drop in Mail. Yet their own figures, state that it's only dropped by 9 Million items, in the last 4 years!

The mail level claim for 2008/2009 is 75 million items to 28 million addresses and for 2004/2005 around 84 million items of mail to 27 million addresses.

The relevance of overall group headcount is limited in relation to RMl workload. It is important we concentrate on RML workload so our argument is then water tight.

However it is worth looking at the headcount for those who are employed by group and not one of the four main sections (RML, POL, PF and GLS)

It would be interesting to look at mail volumes compared to 1 year 2 years 3 years ago etc etc and see where volumes go up and down.

Spotted that in 2002 items per day was 81million
in 2004/05 it was 84million (intro of SDD)
in 2008/09 it was 75million

also that the number of employees originally stated 178,430
then amended to 162,310 = 16,120 = a massive 29% fall since 2002 66,700 job losses since 2002 thats if my maths are correct of course

Its not the accuracy of statistics that makes them true.

Its all in the repetition.
