• To jointly identify/implement genuine opportunities to absorb outdoor and/or indoor workload where time exists within approved attendance times/normal paid work hours.
• To provide sensible options for the business to take advantage of opportunities to increase efficiency when workload declines, or there are absences.
And there's the rub. This highlights only too well the problems of local agreement, there is NO joint identifying and there are NO sensible options - it is only what RM identifies and consider as sensible options and no cooperation by the CWU Reps in identifying solutions - if there are objections they are shovelled out of the way and the changes are introduced anyway.

Take for example park and loop, there is no agreement to 4hrs 15 minutes deliveries, there was a tacit statement that identified that two duties should NOT be bolted together - well that happened anyway and as there is a commitment to doing 4hrs 15 min - these people are still having to do part of a lapsed duty!!!! Is that a sensible option? Of course not.

Royal Mail have brought this action on themselves by being totally unresponsive to sensible attitudes to working practices, there will be areas where these changes have not taken place and still persist in resisting change and those are the areas where sanctions should be taken - instead of which, the areas who have completed the changes are being driven to even further savings which are not realistic. That leaves us with the only course of action left which is to strike.

Grantyboy wrote:our office is still absorbing and going strong. all because people rush around to get it done. people still coming in early to prepp thier own walks then during ips, prepping the absorbtion walk as instructed by manager. managers getting in at 4am to prep 2 absorbtion walks. people doing thier absorbtion BEFORE thier own dutys just to nick some time here and there. When i cant do my own walk let alone absorbtion,i get called to the office and get it in the ear threats etc. its a complete and utter joke. The letter royal mail sent to us to beg us not to strike said something like lets keep our end of the pay and modernisation deal 2007, so where in that deal did it say absorb all year even past the 12 week period?

absorb all year. sounds just like our office except there is only one walk absorbed. most people running about at speeds that would get them a gold medal at the olympics just to get done on time or a bit early and a few coming in before their start time and doing up to an hours work for free. although at least one has seen the light he now comes in on time sorts his walk until he has just enough time to deliver what he's sorted, what isn't in the frame gets left. on a brighter note we have been told as from monday absorbing will finish, yeah right i bet there will be some emergency to get us doing it again after the backlog has been cleared. typical carrot and stick tactics.
i thought i could see light at the end of the tunnel but it was just some bastard with a torch bringing me more work
It's life Jim but not as we know it

I may be wrong, but I thought summer lapsing was part of Phase 2 of the P&M agreement, and as part of Phase 3 lapsing was continued?

Dont do any absorbing they stopped it because we just kept bringing mail back, the pay back was to take the night duty out, loss of all S/A's,loss of dutys, taken on new P/T staff on a permenate contract when we have P/T staff already there on temp contracts and have not sorted out thier contracts or offered the same to those who have been there for 18 months, intimidation of staff so on and so forth.
The result is walks failing all the time york's of packets gone undelivered all week back logg of mail and some very fed up staff,we have more papers in than you can shake a stick at.

In a nutshell absorbing is all year round "where time exists" with extra annual leave slots in the summer.

Are RML expecting you and your fellow comrades to absorb more work than you have time for?

The national phase 3 agreement is very clear in that absorbing is where we have time to do so, in fact read through phase 3 on absorbing and its as pain a daylight RMl are having a laugh if they think they are doing absorbing correctley.

My battle will be to get the extra annual leave spaces in the summer as per phase 2 ive been informed by the DOM he does not want to go above our usual figure of 9 people off at any one time. Whether he will still want absorbing remains to be seen.

Yes its the same at mine they dont want to allow 2 more off over the summer next year either. Its a double con :mad At the very least if we got the extra summer holiday allowance it would be something gained instead of just a pain in the arse.

all well and good big daz but where time allows has been swiftly followed by the new indoor work standard that they are measuring you against this leads to threats of wilful delay and the union reply "just do it and fill in a grievance" cant wait for all out strike

Which is exactly why the CWU have made it clear to RMl that what consistutes a fair workload is vital, RML moving the goalposts to suit budgets has to stop.

In our office a fair work load is judged by the quickest man. If you are a reserve and happen to cover a postie who uses his car and has been on the same delivery for 10 years then thats your hard luck as you are expected to work to the same pace regardless if you use a bike/trolley. One guy last week who uses a bike told our DOM we would be cutting and was asked to explain why, he said it was because he would have to cycle out/back and wait for bags etc. Result: he was swapped off the delivery for another postie who uses his car. Which is not the ans. :arrrghhh
