as an independent observer, you know what my view is on this matter through the other post. it's sad that royal mail take the p1ss and drivers are daft enough to swallow rm's pill.

rm must buy extra vehicles so workers can do their jobs properly, not being banded about in their own vehicles, and creating problems for their fellow workers and putting pressure on new employees. unprofessional on both sides.

it is sad that rm has some totally ignorant and arrogant employees who have absolutely no regard for fellow employees and put the general public into jeopardy. no morals.

there are more important issues to deal with as fellow LFC supporter has mentioned.

it is irrelevent if it is summer or winter, spring or autumn calspy.
and here comes avi cohen! oh i say! at the same end, he's got one back!!

It has happened Linkinpark and will continue to happen unfortuantely as there will be those that think "it will never happen to them", Calpsy will discover this one day, the more miles you drive the higher than average risk it will happen to him or anyone else that drives their Car on duty.

When it happens the usual thing is that RM managers will try to cover their arses and hang out the said offending Postie out to dry, no doubt it has happened many times before.

For the record I voted maybe, the official line is no cars but on the ground it will happen in some offices some more than others, some RM managers probably do realise the risk they are taking and also think "it will never happen to them too", standing in the Dock on a Corproate Manslaughter charge can seriously fück your day up.

and Negligence it is, a Negligence of his responsibilty, health and safety, he may duck it in the Office, he won't be able to in a Court of Law which don't care about work politics, targets or budgets.

So what would happen if you were driving to your walk but were not carrying any letters. Say your walk was near where you lived.

Depends if your insurance covers it. They might view it as business travel as you are moving from one place of work to another with the same employer. I would check the fine print.

Do I need business use to drive to work?

No, under our insurance policy you can drive your vehicle back and forth to the same place of work using social, domestic and commuting purposes. We can however increase your cover if you need to use your vehicle to visit any other sites of business during the working day; we will not however cover any goods or samples carried in connection with business use.

I said 'no'.

That's not the whole story though. In my previous life, and call me naive if you like, we would never, ever, use our own cars on official business unless we had received agreement that we would be paid the proper mileage rate. In fact I can't think of any conventional job (as opposed to casual) apart from ours where people voluntarily use their own private transport on the firm's business without payment. Are there any ?

You're not going to stamp out private cars on delivery, the habit is now too ingrained. In my view the CWU missed a trick ten years ago -- they should have negotiated a tariff for official use of private cars, since that was what their members clearly wanted, but when did the CWU follow its members' interests? Instead they just opposed it. Now it's too late.

I'll go further. A few years in the future, we'll find possession and use of a private car will become a necessary condition to work for RM in the first place. And there will be little or (most probably) no payment for this. Anyone disagree ?

We used shared vans for about four weeks now it's back to the old way of people doing their own walks, coming in early, using cars etc. The reason for this is the van sharing was a complete f@ck-up but RM won't admit it. Also under the van sharing every duty was cutting off daily now under the old ways most of the walks are getting finished. JOB AND FINISH IS ALIVE AND KICKING AND NOT MANY WORK THE HOURS THEY ARE PAID. But as I have said in previous posts the incompetance of this management beggers belief. :left:

The trouble with Van sharing is the different personalities pulling in different directions, a recipe for disaster.

Lets just see in the future whether im rite but im telling you all shared vans are coming whether you like it not...........................
If they start building ones of these at your DO then its written in stone 2 in a van will come in

Is it really worth using your own Car, to get Home a bit earlier in the short term?
Don't forget. RM have a NATIONAL Agreement, allowing them to make you do "other meaningful work", to keep you busy until you've worked all your hours. :hmmmm

I know that they're letting you finish early now. But that's because it's the only way that they can get the Deliveries completed in time. It won't be too long, before they reduce the number of FT Duties (EVR and/or Buy Down). Then you will have more work to do, and woking to your time, even WITH your cars. Despite the fact that you've already proved that it's impossible to complete your existing workloads without them. :hmmmm

Does RM pay towards your Petrol/Diesel, Servicing, Depreciation, Tyres, Brake Pads, etc., etc.. No. Have you any idea how much you loose each year in depreciation alone?
Do you all follow procedure (risk assessment, letter to your Insurance Company, etc.?). If not. You won't be covered by RM's Bond. Which means that unless you've paid for your own Business Insurance, you aren't covered. And risk 6 Points on your license, and will be personally liable for any claims if you have an accident. Including any compensation claims for injuries.

Even if you DO follow procedure. Unless you pay for your own Business Insurance, you're only covered 3rd Party. So if your car is broken into, stolen, catches fire, or otherwise damaged, wihout you being able to claim of someone elses Insurance. You don't get a penny. Which is particularly serious, if you've taken out a loan/HP to pay for it. You could potentially be paying for a written off car, for years. :hmmmm

pinstripe wrote:Guys, there was a very interesting news item put up in the News forum (Posties plan strike vote after being told to work to letter ) just yesterday. It seems that in Colchester, posties who finish early are now being given more work to do, to take them to their official finish time.
Now, who will still say that RM don't care if you finish half an hour early, how many posties in Colchester will be using their cars, just so they can have even more work to do for free?
In Colchester there is a long standing agreed policy on non use of private cars, this is noy to say that some do not do it though!
