Post employees would be affected by language legislation

SOUTH Wales’ postmen and women would be among the thousands of workers affected by any new language legislation.

As bodies that provide key public services, the Royal Mail and the Post Office would be covered by any Welsh Measures drawn up by the Assembly Government.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail Group said it was already committed to providing a “comprehensive, bilingual service to its customers”, but said it would prefer for this to continue on the current voluntary basis.

She said: “Like most businesses, we would have preferred the voluntary arrangement that has delivered this good service all these years. However, we do not expect the new arrangements to cause us any significant problems.”

The organisation has been developing bilingual services for a decade through its Welsh language scheme.

Telecoms workers for BT and utilities workers at British Gas would also be affected by any legislation resulting from yesterday’s Legislative Competence Order (LCO).

Wales’ director for BT, Ann Beynon, said the company was already committed to the Welsh language.

She said: “The services we provide are on a voluntary basis and we do not believe it would be helpful to enforce requirements on businesses by way of legislation.”

A spokesman for British Gas added: “We will scrutinise the LCO details and maintain a constructive dialogue with the Assembly Government. Our commitment to providing Welsh language services to customers continues.”

They should do away with regional languages it just costs money for bi-lingual road signs and lets face it what good is it? I mean do we see road signs in viking or roman latin? of course not.

It is a bit like the German's saying you all speak not the same as us and we will kill all those who speak a different language too make us understand one another!. IE genocide it don't work let's live in peace with each other even if we don't understand them all at time's!.

I also think that it's important to preserve languages. Why shouldn't the Welsh be allowed to speak Welsh?
If you were to go to Mainland Europe, you would be expected to speak the language of the Country you were in. So why shoulnd't it be compulsary for everyone providing a service in Wales to speak Welsh?
Not necessarily perfect Welsh, but good enough to answer Customer queries in Welsh. It's a matter of curtesy!

No it's a matter of sycophancy, the language is dead and kept alive only to pander to fancy, it's like all these old buildings grade 1 and 2 listed and victorian chimneys - pull 'em down and stop wasting good money.

Not so. Welsh might be dead (or at least, very poorly) in South Wales, but it's alive and kicking in North Wales.

They even 'welshify' english words. such as Rwgbi for Rugby, Criced for Cricket, bws for bus,
tacsi for taxi and even fecbwc for Facebook.

That's not "welshifying" it's making up words to suit the situation - the French threw a strop a few years ago over anglicised words and they too "frenchified" words because they thought it denigrated the french language - now that I can understand - but really tacsi - why not just say taxi? I mean what's welsh for "Hello Ewe - how about a date tonight"?
