Questionably Employment Practicies

Post by Puppetmaster »

I find it hard to beleive a Company the size of RM and with a very stong Union together with tough employment laws can get away with so many Questionably practicies.

2 examples i know of,perhaps you know similar.

1 hour a week contracts, staff employed on 1 hour a week contract, working full week evey week but sick pay holiday only based on cotracted hours, also a number of staff on Saturday only contracts, again working full time but limited benefits .

Aye - I can see the one flaw in your statement though.

Anybody who takes on a job with a one hour contract is either crazy and deserves what they get or they want those contracted hours and should just work them. Rm only get away with it because people are willing to accept such crap. I wouldn't even go near a contract like that, unless it suited me. Remember, those people can basically take any time off they want, they only have to do one hour a week. Maybe it suits some people with their lifestyles etc...
The way to really protect your rights is to always only do your contracted hours. One hour contracts would be worthless to Rm then.

The problem being if you are offered work and are on JS but turn it down because you don't like the contract, you loose all of your benefits.

Also even though it is a 1hr contract most people will accept it at the start because its better to work than not, this is what RM relies on. Once you have your shoe in the door though you can always keep pushing for better conditions I would.

1 hour contracts, this from a world renowned employer that says it values it's employees, i think it's an absolute disgrace and something that should not be allowed, i wonder if most people / MPs know about the dodgy management practices

I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't lose any benefits for refusing a job with a 1 hour contract. If so, then its simple, take the job, do only the one hour a week, and claim the rest from the government as tax credits.

You are entitled to earn some money and still claim benefits so really we're looking at a benefits cheats charter. It also one of the tactics used by Walmart who are highly criticised in the US for paying low wages on sub standard contracts and people claiming benefits and health care from the state. Some states in America refuse to let them open stores.

it is Walmart stuff , RM would say in their defence that people get p***ed about even more by Agencies and/or use the recession as a excuse

That's very true.
Likewise I've heard more than enough moaning from those who applied for and accepted part time contracts ( 25 hours or whatever ), never apply for full time vacancies because they're all for 'difficult' walks and complain they're on less money than others every time thry're on holiday or off sick.

What full time jobs, no one in our office has been made full time for at least 5 years, If a full timer retires or leaves it's a part timer who gets the shift, if they want OT then they can have it if not someone else has to box the duty in for them so it's ready ( readyish) to go when they start. But they have never offered a part timer a full time post it just vanishes, hence why the split which when they started usung part timers used to be 80% full time 20% part time is now around 50 -50.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

No, you would loose Benefits for refusing a job, just because it doesn't offer enough hours. :Sick The only way out, is to apply for enough jobs with more hours, so that you don't need to apply for 1 hour contracts. But as they check up on you, to ensure that you are applying for enough jobs. You might be left with no other choice, than to apply for one.

It was bad enough, when I was unemployed in the '90's. But I hear that they're even worse for keeping tabs on you now. I lost track of the number of unsuitable jobs I had to apply for, to keep them off my back. And it only took me 7 Months to find a Job. :hmmmm
