okay been on the 6 hour
training course
so on delivery they seem good fro those
in the morning punch in your user ID(those with barcoded ID badges can scan those) and pin number
scan your duty barcode
PHG will still allocate your items as now with the old style T&T guns
on delivery you scan the item whether it be RD,SD or tracked
if it requires a signature then the next screen requires you punch in the recipients name then they sign on the touch screen
data uploads near instantly(uses the vodafone network)
you can scan multiple items and then get 1 sig
you need to scan your SD/tracked items with a reason for non delivery
what you do with the PDA at the end of shift depends on your office set up
either back to base and in the cradle or brought in the next day
PHG still has to allocate items to the office retention barcode but not scan undelivered with a reason code
later the software will update to let PHG's use them for everything and use in callers office
the pda's have sat nav built in,the ability to recieve texts from base or text to base(PC)
you can phone your office by an 0800 number then input your office id code(same as on the PDA)
phone 999
phone RAC breakdown
phone IT support
you cant phone any other number nor call/text any other pda
texts come through without any sound notification
now tracking
the pda's dont track you as such
however the DOM could take the latitude and longtitude of your track points eg where you got a signature
and see what time you were at X point by putting those co-ordinates into an OS map

the training for being a 'PDA trainer' is officially 6.5 hoursk979aaa wrote:Please let us all know how long the training should be and how long it actually is in practice!.johnnyp wrote:Thanks custard mateOur guys are going to our Mail Centre next Monday to be trained up on them.
ours took 5
if you mean training for drivers using PDA's then its 45-60 minutes depending on how the trainer does it

What exactly are we paying our union fees for? Lack of guidance from this union is nothing short of shocking!k979aaa wrote:Please let us all know how long the training should be and how long it actually is in practice!.johnnyp wrote:Thanks custard mateOur guys are going to our Mail Centre next Monday to be trained up on them.

ive been led to believe the union has sent a letter to all reps giving the pda's the green light?
as for the difference in training
the 6 hour course is to train people to then in turn train others in how to use the PDA's
so the training course covers delivery use eg drivers and indoor use eg PHG's
supposedly its recommended drivers are trained in groups of no more than 4

There are no in principle disagreements to the training of staff to use them but there is no TOR between CWU and RM so HQ's line is do not use them until there iscustard wrote:ive been led to believe the union has sent a letter to all reps giving the pda's the green light.
Letter to Branches
No. 704/08 Ref:540 Date: 15th September 2008
To: Branches with POSTAL Members
Dear Colleague
Postal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
Further to LTB 693/08, Branches will be aware that we have reached an impasse concerning the rollout/deployment of PDAs. However, at a meeting held with Royal Mail Management today it became apparent that the issues raised go much wider than purely this piece of equipment and do in fact embrace the deployment of all new technology.
We have not yet concluded “a generic framework to deal with the trialling and implementation of all new technology” as set out in the Pay and Modernisation agreement and the attached Joint Statement has been agreed to deal with that question.
While the terms set out in the Joint Statement are being actioned, Branches are asked to make our Reps and Members aware of this position and to take all steps possible to avoid any flashpoints with Management in respect of the use of PDAs. Further information will be issued in due course.
Please distribute this as quickly as possible using text messages/emails etc.
Any enquiries to Bob Gibson’s Office, quoting reference 540
Email address: hnutley@cwu.org
Yours sincerely
Bob Gibson
Assistant Secretary
PDA’s RATHBONE PLACE 15TH SEPTEMBER 2008
Royal Mail and CWU accept that there is a need to finalise the generic deployment framework referred to in section 2 (Delivering Change and Flexibility) in the Pay and Modernisation Agreement, in order to provide clarity. We have jointly committed to resolving this matter before the end of September 2008.
In the meantime we are both keen to avoid any flashpoints regarding the deployment of PDAs therefore CWU Branches should continue to cooperate with the rollout/deployment of the PDAs.
Further communication will be issued in due course.
