An energy company is suspending the free giveaway of energy-saving light bulbs amid concerns about the way they are delivered.
E.on embarked upon the national promotion last week by posting the bulbs to thousands of householders.
But it has emerged that in many cases the packages did not fit through letterboxes and have to be picked up at Royal Mail distribution centres.
Royal Mail urged companies considering similar postings to seek their advice.
E.on said the giveaway was part of their commitment to help people save energy and that it distributes millions of the bulbs each year.
'Appropriate advice'
A company spokeswoman said: "We have only ever received a handful of queries regarding this activity in the past.
"We are always looking at ways of improving the way in which we pass on energy saving measures to the public, and as we have recently received a small number of complaints about the latest batch of bulbs distributed not fitting through letterboxes, we are now temporarily suspending this activity.
"We are working with Royal Mail to implement a solution to this issue and will reinstate our distribution of free low energy light bulbs once we have an agreed process in place."
In response, a spokeswoman for Royal Mail said there was a "volume" of the uncollected light bulbs at distribution centres across Scotland.
She added: "Items will be retained at the local Royal Mail delivery office for a period of three weeks.
"This is a national posting and in this case no return address was put on these items by the customer.
"Royal Mail would urge all posters of large mailings to speak to Royal Mail where the appropriate advice will be given regarding the posting of unusual sized items and the importance of putting a return address on all mail."

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
