That might cheer up a few non driver haters in my office 🤣🤣🤣
Think it’s funny 8-9000 people lose their jobs - drivers will go as well - half the delivery staff would get cut - might be you

'And as an additional point - if we are having to lower our prices on parcels to win or retain contracts, is this strategy really paying off?

Imagine delivering 300 parcels at £2 profit = £600, compared with delivering 200 parcels at £4 profit = £800. RM could be doing more work for less margin'.

If you don't lower the prices to win or retain contracts then you will keep losing market share which if it becomes substantial will have a massive impact on revenue despite your theoretical assertion.

'Take DPD which has built its reputation on reliability, reliable delivery windows, tracking and customer service. It's not the cheapest but it wins business because it's reliable and people pay more for a better service. Same goes for UPS, which is one of the more expensive parcel carriers.'

The vast majority of DPD drivers are classfied as self employed and have to rent the big DPD vans that you see. This is exactly the model of working that we don't want.

UPS have also recently said they want to adopt the bogus self employment model

Do you see what is happening here? This is what the Union is facing.

Unfortunately it is a race to the bottom and customers aren't willing to pay more for better service quality. The customers are looking for the cheapest price.

Everyone should read this article to understand the reality of the industry we are in and the challenges that the union is facing.

DPD for example have gone down the same pan, my parcel hungry next door neighbour gets deliveries from all the usual suspects and DPD now just dump on the front doorstep the same as the others except our postie who still has the decency to hide stuff round the back.

Of which the CWU has said nothing. This is an important warning for workers in the final mile. However it doesn't validate Martin's or the CWU's position.

Personally, I want to be the eyewitness that states definitively whether the Titanic went down intact or broke in two. Got a book title lined up and everything, so this is all just material to me.

If what MW says is correct then RM will be bankrupt in 5 years time unless the Government decides to outlaw owner drivers, given that seems pretty unlikely then why on earth would DK spend £3B of his own money buying a company heading for bankruptcy in just a few years?

If RM is in much poor financial shape then why is it paying it's CEO a £7m annual salary and it's owner a £114 payment for loan fees?

If it helps I’m willing to be the sacrificial lamb that takes VR tomorrow (10 months wages will do) so that the company can keep on going. No honestly I’m willing to do this for the sake of the good ship Royal Mail and all who sail in her!!!

Nobody said the business will go bankrupt. Like you imply DK isn't foolish enough to buy a business that will go bankrupt.
The fact is that the total assets that RM own, (Property and Land) will easily recoup the purchase value of the sale. DK isn't going to lose anything.

It is the direction of travel they go in to keep/make the business profitable in its operation.
It is the workers that will suffer if the owners decide to implement the self employment gig economy method.
The owners will profit regardless of the outcome. They can't lose.
