Promises Promises
A lot has changed with a new owner on board.
We're all on the same ship apparently, but some of us still can't find the 35-hour deck, the equalisation cabin or the work-life balance lounge that we were shown on the original brochure. Meanwhile in our office, we're busy rearranging the deckchairs by moving frames around the shop floor while management studies the fuel bill.
But looking back over the last few years, what promises do you think have drifted furthest from what members were originally told?
35 hour week with no loss in pay?
Equalisation?
Better work-life balance?
More achievable duties?
Improved QoS?
Reduced pressure from later starts?
Revision and re-pick?
No compulsory redundancies?
Or something else?
Genuine question. Looking back now, which promise has aged the worst?

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

It's less of a cruise ship and more like one of those big swan pedalos from the boating lake. 3 people trying to do the work of 4 while management insist that its perfectly designed

The agreement to sell second deliveries in return for job and finish. That agreement has never been withdrawn and yet the working day has to be filled. It's no wonder people get fed up.postslippete wrote: ↑12 Jun 2026, 18:33A lot has changed with a new owner on board.

That's an interesting one because job and finish has largely disappeared through a combination of revisions, PDA data and SISO over the years.
When the CWU and RM rolled out PDA outdoor actuals, the union said that it was not being introduced to track individuals or used as a disciplinary tool and yet Simon Thompson was forced to acknowledge that it was used in conduct cases in that parliamentary committee.
For decades, it was RM culture that if you cleared you cleared your OWN duty, you could go home because managers cared more about the work being completed than the exact minute that you finished. Has SISO improved productivity or just increased people monitoring?

Re: Promises Promises
Royal Mail agreed job and finish because it was cheaper than second deliveries. The CWU sold jobs on that basis. Nothings changed about that agreement. The employer got it's savings yet here we are today with an agreement that's roundly ignored.postslippete wrote: ↑13 Jun 2026, 07:11tramssirhc wrote: ↑13 Jun 2026, 06:56

Another example is mandatory LWT's.

Re: Promises Promises
Every single attempt to scrimp in my two decades in this job has only made things worse. This pervasive logic of extreme frugality has led us into a mental cul-de-sac. Sometimes you have to spend your way out of a problem. Isn't that what investment is? I'm not suggesting DK become a spendthrift, just facing the reality of what this service requires in order to function properly. Instead the instant reaction is to reduce service.postslippete wrote: ↑13 Jun 2026, 07:11Has SISO improved productivity or just increased people monitoring?
This is a national problem beyond just RM - this incessant tightening of the ratchet to achieve greater 'value for money'. It's the blatant proof that no-one will admit out loud: we have long-since stopped living in a prosperous society. Austerity is as good as it gets.
The machine stops.

Re: Promises Promises
Doubtful, it's separate pots of money for separate entities. Mr Kretinsky probably got the opportunity to buy extra (cheap) West Ham shares from Sullivan as he is stepping away.Peabrain22 wrote: ↑13 Jun 2026, 18:18But iv just came across a post today saying that kretinskys just become westham united majority shareholder.. where has this money come from.. is it an overspill from a record breaking Christmas or is indeed cream from underpaid employees..

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: Promises Promises
It's probably still about £9B as DK's probably just borrowed most of the money to buy the shares. Although it's a bit surprising the shares are being bought by EP Group rather than being personally owned by DK.clashcityrocker wrote: ↑13 Jun 2026, 19:41His personal wealth is estimated to be about 9 billion dollars.Peabrain22 wrote: ↑13 Jun 2026, 18:18But iv just came across a post today saying that kretinskys just become westham united majority shareholder.. where has this money come from..
