The Union and Royal Mail could exit talks with an incredibly positive outcome and people would still moan about it.

Doubtful.
Royal Mail's trump card in all this will be "if we don't make changes there will be forced redundancies".
The government don't want that, the union don't want that.

The area reps are running around telling those who'll listen that the talks are positive. Members can only guess the latest cruelty the CWU are signing up to in their secret meeting.

Yeah it seems that could be a possibility but our office and I know that two of the neighbouring offices are similar in that if they introduced something that required 25% less staff we might just about have the right amount so presumably no-one would be forced to leave, I assume that's widespread although there must be fully staffed offices somewhere.

I'll be very surprised if RM budge much on what they want.
The union's heavy and light day is nowhere near the saving that the company wants. I said all along that I think there will be a bit of wiggle room but not much, maybe on the lines of more Saturdays off or a slight hybrid version of the RM/Union way but all I do know is the better days will shortly be over (if you can call it that). RM are nicely making it unbearable for the legacy staff to leave and it won't be that far away where the majority of the staff will be on the newer contracts which suits them and their savings.
The parcel industry is moving fast, they know this and letters are seen as a hindrance. Having a parcel business that has letters involved is like a ton weight dragging you back which is stopping them flourishing.
RM's ideal world would either involve owner drivers or staff on minimum wage with flexible hours from 7am to 7pm.

The problem with what RM want, is that the ODM would actually work in theory if the duties were properly sized, but the CWU openly went into the trials without making sure this was the case. Leaving things to be agreed at a local level only works so much, there needs to be a standardised delivery model, attendance patterns, duty length, clearly with allowances for the type of area the delivery is to.
