The bet is clearly that the company won't have to deliver the/this USO much longer. Remove that and RM can join the other couriers in the profitable gutter.postslippete wrote: ↑30 Jan 2026, 22:54I think the real question isn't whether EQ has a cost, because it does, but whether a high turnover, 2-tier workforce is genuinely cheaper in the long run, especially a business that still has a legal USO to deliver

Re: Heavy And Light
Yes, RM are clearly trying to force the regulatory argument. While they still have a legal obligation to deliver letters, the last few years show that service collapse isn’t a strong deterrent when fines are being treated as a cost of doing business.
But the USO remains the single biggest constraint on RM’s ability to fully adopt an Evri/Amazon model. As long as nationwide letter delivery is a legal requirement, RM can’t completely pivot to a parcels-only, gig-style operation, no matter how much they might want to. So much of what is happening now is pressure-building rather than an end state - degrading service to make the existing USO look untenable, while still operating just close enough to compliance to keep the regulator engaged.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Re: Heavy And Light
I am not convinced that Daniel Kretinsky wants to go down in history as the man who destroyed the USO after 500 years of history.
The Daily Mail will have a field day.
And what would he gain?
Compared to the enormous wealth he already has, a "gig style" Royal Mail will still only bring in comparative peanuts.

Oh,same here. Plus it makes absolutely zero sense, just creating a headache for the COM.ted_e_bear wrote: ↑31 Jan 2026, 06:39f**k me that's not going to end well I'm not happy with thatMartin Walsh wrote: ↑30 Jan 2026, 22:11
Royal Mail in their disagreement are insisting that the COM chooses the duty for each individual in the office on deployment not based on seniority. Remember one in every four jobs have gone.
Of course,it is just another tactic to push the more senior workers through the exit door. However,in true RM style, certain people (break dodgers, corner cutters) would no doubt be left alone whilst the people who start on time, work at a steady pace & fail to complete the ridiculous sized duties would be targeted & shifted around on a daily basis…

Nothing adds up in this company. It is literally insane the way it is being run. However,it is apparent that eveything is being done to deter people from sending letters, from the price of stamps,to post boxes being taped up over Christmas.clashcityrocker wrote: ↑01 Feb 2026, 12:22I am not convinced that Daniel Kretinsky wants to go down in history as the man who destroyed the USO after 500 years of history.

My customers stop me on the street to ask me what is going on,when I try to explain they look at me like I’m making it up

He will bring in more than peanuts if his plan to end letter delivery comes off.clashcityrocker wrote: ↑01 Feb 2026, 12:22I am not convinced that Daniel Kretinsky wants to go down in history as the man who destroyed the USO after 500 years of history.

GLS makes £330 million profit , which is then reduced by Royal mails performance at the minute as loss making. The uk parcel market is masssive compared to europe. A parcel only royal mail gig economy will bring in at least another £200 million on top which would be at least £500 million profit and pay off his money borrowed to buy us in around 6 yrs. He cant lose in my opinion.

Re: Heavy And Light
Daniel Kretinsky's personal wealth has seen significant growth, with estimates indicating his net worth is around $10.1 billion as of 2026. His wealth primarily comes from his stake in Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH), a conglomerate with assets valued at approximately 28.9 billion euros ($31.3 billion).
£200 million from a gig style Royal Mail still seems like small beer (and peanuts) and just doesn't seem worth the negative publicity.

Then maybe it doesn't matter how much money the mail or parcels make and it's all about selling off all the property then getting rid. Also I suspect he doesn't care about the USO or company history one bit. I've so far seen zero evidence of the service or USO compliance improving. Other than cheating the first class compliance by leaving 2nd class sitting for days.

Re: Heavy And Light
There`s a whole level of expensively employed managers that RM could cull and save lots of money. That should have been the first port of call surely.? I`ve been to other offices and have seen managers (keyboard warriors) sitting about while walks stay in their frames and trays of flats build up beneath the frames.darkgable wrote: ↑31 Jan 2026, 16:59Plus they are still advertising for new managers . Surely big savings could be made by a Cull of managers. Somedays we have 4 in an office of 60 people. Dont have enough postmen but have too many managersThommo44 wrote: ↑31 Jan 2026, 07:05
This is where the government and ofcom need to step in and say an independent inquiry needs to be conducted and be funded by Royal Mail.
I haven’t really got the time but im sure going through previous reports (the last 10 years, or since privatisation), we were making decent profits with fully manned offices and excellent customer service. With stamps now double the cost, even with a 5% year on year reduction in letters, they should be making a fortune![]()

Why? Do you think he'll cry into his billions? His self-worth is derived from his net worth. He has no loyalty to this country or its history or institutions. We can only assume he has loyalty to Czechia, or at the very least that it could be bought at a sufficiently hefty price.clashcityrocker wrote: ↑01 Feb 2026, 12:22I am not convinced that Daniel Kretinsky wants to go down in history as the man who destroyed the USO after 500 years of history.

It's the same argument as mentioned above when DK as so much wealth why would be want to buy RM just to asset strip the property side for a few £100m's, which would probably take years to complete?funkflex55 wrote: ↑01 Feb 2026, 18:39Then maybe it doesn't matter how much money the mail or parcels make and it's all about selling off all the property then getting rid. I was told by a senior union official that the real reason he bought us was to legitimise his business in the UK. His real wealth comes from energy. Oil and gas from Russia. Once he is established as a creditable UK business man then he is free to expand his energy supply infrastructure here.
Remember also it was a zero risk purchase. Majority of the money was lent to him. The business itself is servicing the debt so all he needs to do is sell and lease back a few big properties when he fancies a bit of extra disposable income. Once he makes the switch to energy we'll be split up and sold/handed back to govt
My dad always told me if a deal looks to good to be true....it probably is. The CWU wanted desperately to believe that DK was the answer to everything so believed everything he said.

You hear people say the company will get split up but they can never tell you how that would work in practice.
Do you all still work out of the same office ? Would you need new mail centres ? What lorry’s are taking what where ?
Who gets what equipment ?
