Probably falls into the CWU's vague 'encourage everyone to drive' campaign.

I would give any driver two weeks before they were begging to come off it again.

I'm on a 1in4 and the two weeks that I work 5 days in a row almost kill me and that's without double and triple mail every day.

The thought of doing that every week would probably see me heading for the door so no uproar from this driver.
I’m also a driver on a 9 day fortnight and would love Saturday and Sunday off every week .
You should try doing a 1 in 6. Would probably put you in your place.
Not really, your on a shorter day compared to me .
So your original argument here is that pure walking duties are better off than drivers, yes?
Where have I said that ?
If you refer back to your earlier argument on this thread you will recall you said people on certain contracts should be...
Forced to drive or lose their job
:wave
Ah you’ve edited a portion of what I said to suit your narrative, I see what you did there.Again where have I said pure walking duties are better off than driving duties , stick to union bashing at every opportunity.
I literally quoted you, entirely within the context of your statement, about how you believe non drivers with driving licences should either be forced to drive or lose their livelihoods.

The word 'Authoritarian' springs to mind when reading your thoughts on this issue.

Non drivers , who can drive , choosing not to drive , do you know how crazy that sounds. If I had to drive to keep my job or lose it , I know what I would do

15+ years ago Everyone used to work 6 days a week and bags were heavier with bills, sky/cable mags etc
It was 22 years ago that the single daily delivery was introduced and we moved to a 5 day week.
I know, I was there.
The delivery was 3 hrs on a bad day and half that on a Saturday.
Fatigue wise there is no comparison with what we're expected to do now.
We also had push bikes that massively reduced the fatigue too.

A bad day 15 years ago isn’t anywhere near comparable to now.

I would’ve maybe gone half hour over on a 2 and a half hour to 3 hour delivery , if you did that now you’re looking at 6-7 hours outdoors and about 40x as many parcels.

It’s not the same at all.

Ive noticed Martin Walsh is posting on here this morning, could you please explain why you have said you are trying to get outdoor work in place for non drivers on Saturdays when you said in the same breath that fatigue is an issue and indoor work on Saturdays is the only counter?
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Hans I can assure you that I do and I have also been into the Pilot sites and seen first hand the ODM working and the challenges which still need to be addressesd.

On Non Drivers there are 8400 non drivers out of 60 thousand Delivery Staff.

There are a number of units in London where the majority do not drive. However in most units around the UK the number of non drivers is much smaller.

The decision to make non drivers work Saturdays within any rotation is the right one for a number of reasons.

1. It’s is fair to all.
2: The pilots have found if D2D is not thrown up on a Saturday in advance of Monday then there is a knock on effect on Mondays.
3. There is outdoor work which non drivers can perform on Saturdays including going out with a first class route to perform part of a duty including being replenished whilst out ok delivery.
4. Non Drivers doing this may reduce finishing times on a Saturday for all.
5. That Saturday will become a non drivers work day where they do not do an all mail route which will reduce fatigue. Drivers in Cumbernauld rotate daily between all mail routes and 1st class routes to help reduce fatigue.

Further work is being done on alternative delivery modes such as electric bikes , trikes and HCTs.

If you believe that ensuring that non drivers work Saturdays is to make it "fair to all" you have to ensure that non drivers are not subject to levels of fatigue that drivers are not. Fair to all isn't a one way street.

In my opinion you are a long way from addressing that and continuing to cite the numbers as if it justifies a lesser level of care shouldn't sit well with anyone.

Woody we are the very early stages of the Pilot only unit has a month experience and two others have two weeks experience.

We have identified the issue of non drivers and the fatigue issue and have spoken about solutions.

It would not be right for me to state what these are on this site.

Instead we will be holding a pilot site update for all reps next Friday and a National Briefing following this and we will then communicate this further.

I appreciate it is not an easy problem to solve and as I've stated before I don't believe a Monday-Friday pattern is a genuine solution to fatigue even if members would probably jump at the chance.

I personally believe these all mail duties are now too large and the expectation on members is too much for both drivers and non drivers, I think some of the pilot offices should have been based on reducing the duty size to accommodate the higher call rate inside the existing delivery spans but what do I know....
