Nearly all the parcels that come in our office still need sorting out into the various sections and then sorting again into the walks. For some reason I thought that these giant hubs would have automation that would mean that all our parcels would automatically be sorted into our walks so they didn't have to pay anybody to come in early or do any IPS. Parcel automation hasn't really saved anything in delivery offices other than have us all start and finish later.
The machines at the hubs don't have anywhere near enough outputs to walk sort. There must be getting towards 1,000 walks in the area we cover and we're one of the smaller MCs. Once all MCs have got packet sorting machines you'd have a chance. The 1st pass would be the busiest walks, the next pass would be the leftover ones from the first pass, for the next busiest walks and so on.

With the new scanning thing when it gets fully implemented I believe that in theory RM will be able to see exactly how many parcels each walk has got. They can already see how many mech items each walk has got. They're bound to look into some sort of system to log how many manual items (letters and flats) each walk has got

Our parcels all come in mixed as well. Large parcels in Yorks with small ones it’s a right mess. Then they need sorting into sections and again to walks it all takes a while in the morning.
We've been told that unless a large one that's made it into the small is massive it has to go into the sleeve. Once the new scanning thing comes into effect, I don't know if we'll be allowed to move stuff between small and large and vice versa.

We scan all the parcels into our walks so the managers know's how many Tracked parcels each duty has to deliver but as for logging the number of letters and flats, well, that's still fag packet stuff. What I do know is that delivering over two days worth of mail is often a royal pain, especially as most of our walks have double slots I keep going back on myself.

Those super hubs that RM have built are massive though. The one at Daventry is 53 acres!! I thought the idea was to the smaller MCs and have everything processed in these giant hubs?

If only my van was a Delorean I would quite happily transport back to 2006. The walks were a doddle, I probably made double the amount of money I'm making now due to overtime, quality of service was amazing and oddly enough RM was still profitable! All privatisation has done is bleed us posties dry while the owners and senior bosses run off with the loot.

Think it's something like 750 outputs for the machines at the hubs. Before some DOs used to get a split done for them but now we just have 1 sleeve per DO for the smalls (primary and secondary sort). My guess is that eventually the hubs will sort the parcels into batches and then maybe a machine at the MCs sorts to walks perhaps.

With the new parcel scanning system RM will know how many for each walk before they even arrive at the DO. They'll know for mech flats and letters. There are solutions already to scanning manual letters and flats so potentially it's something they could eventually bring in to MCs to know how many manual letters and flats.

It is companies still pushing online january sales, they will try and keep it going for as long as possible, coupled with alot of people & some schools not going back to work until the middle of last week / NY ordering rush etc.
As i said earlier in the thread by jan 20th it will be dead as a dodo.
(Until easter with a small blip on valentines week)

What you have got is the last of the weekend residue.

Get ready for a very lean year.
Hahaha, jesus some people.
RM are pushing for every contract going for parcels, as they should be, which in turn is overloading us with parcels.
Now if come the 20th it's as dead as a dodo i will come on and apologise and bow before your greatness.
Hahaha
Well…..it is monday jan 20th and i declare it is indeed “dead as a dodo”

Was i right?

who preps it?
i always say the duty holder takes care to prep left or right on double slots, mr a n other prepping it just throws it anywhere in the slot!
i argued this a few years back and marked every letter not in order "missort" and dumped them all on the managers desk on return for a week!
nothing happened though, it cleared as far as they were concerned :arrrghhh

Tracked and specials only and a hour late out of the office. Just shows the difference in offices or do you work in delivery?
But if it keeps you happy!

It was more quiet yesterday than it was the last few months. It was reminiscent of the quiet January's of old. Alas, that feeling was stomped out today when had s**t load of parcels that came in today ☠️ Lorry driver seems to be coming later and later so of course having to spend more time prepping the IPS and the parcels. Think reaching the point where you'll be sorting letters and parcels with the same amount of time spent on delivery (which won't be a lot).
