i beleive its young or old, but also it is unfair as i say, i lost the chance of a full time job just on the age matter, therefore it is flawed

But as we have already discussed seniority has nothing to do with age, therefore it is irrelevant, you lost the job because the manager screwed up therefore there is no saying he would not have screwed up picking the best man for the job or any other system they put in place.

depends when you go tthe job as well. If it was before the Discrimination Act came into force I dont think it counts, but as someone else has stated if jobs are picked on the basis of age NOW..it is dicriminatory. Seniority isnt based on age as there are younger people more senior than me and I too, am senior that some older people.

IF ten people started on the same day surely it should go on their numbers?,its the only fair way as favouritism is very much alive and kicking and "best candidate for the job" wouldn't stand a chance against it.

Its not illegal, if 2 people start at the same time then it usually goes on test results and not age. If age was used as the decider then this is the discrimination part of it and so you can seek legal advice.

But seniority is based on length of service.

thats how we do it

Two of us started the same day,the other guy was made senior to me because of his surname.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I applied, along with another ag who started at the same time as me, for a full time job and he got it, cos he was older, yet we started at same time, so it discriminated against me cos i was younger. This is illegal under a newish labour law, Therefore how can seniority still be valid in such circumstances. Rather than by how good they could do the job it was given to someone based on there age.

I have an idea of a way to solve it one is an idea thats probably hardly to manage but fairer. Stagger employing people and make them start at the bottom and as things are at the moment pick the best candidate for each job
How do you know it was because he was older? Perhaps he was the better candidate.

SENIORITY

Post by vigilante »

When I started I got the crap duties and holidays--I accepted it.
I knew I had to wait a few years to get better pickings.
Now I have done twenty four years I want my share!
Seniority is the fairest of all-----obviously the least senior amongst us are the ones who complain---human nature!
You take the mess up with leave these days never had trouble when seniority was in, seem to have more conflict now than we ever did.

I don't have a problem with seniority, what I have a problem with is people coming in just get put on a duty and are left there and the more useless they are the better they are treated (left on the easy duties, always getting their long weekends etc.)

How does this happen?why if there are easy duties have they not been put up for signing by the staff. At our place we put new entrants on a walk if avaiable for 12 weeks(less if they do the business)then they go on reserve untill the opportunity to sign for a duty becomes available. If there is no vacant duty i go on to reserve and they pick my duty up for the 12 week period then go on reserve.

I'm afraid our office is bad for allowing duties to be picked up by new entrants and being left on them - - I've complained about it even though it doesn't affect me I can't get them to give me a work-plan/318 - so I just do what I like for the most part. One duty has been split in to 3 because it is a large development and a woman has been doing 9 til 2 Mon to Fri for the best part of 12 months without that part of the duty being put up as a vacancy. Not that I want to do it but there are plenty of part timers who would jump at the chance. Hopefully we will go for a repick when and IF geo route is ever accepted.
