I have a congratulations card for a lady who has just had a baby and on the envelope (top left hand corner) the words SPECIAL DELIVERY! is printed.
I'm concerned that if I put this in the post, it will cause a problem for the Royal Mail, as it is not a 'special delivery' as far as the letter is concerned.
Would it go through the postal procedure without a problem, as long as I put an ordinary first class stamp on it?

I guess I could get a bigger envelope to put it in, thanks for the suggestion, but I kinda think that would spoil the moment (if you know what I mean).

Cheeky, If your card reaches a Special Delivery Operator, presumably there is no SPD sticky label to scan, therefore it will either - continue its journey in the normal class of post that you have chosen, or its just possible that a SPD sticky label could be applied and scanned and then it could continue its journey as a SPD item.
Unless you mean you have received someone else's card in error, in which case I would take it to the Post Office.
