I'm thinking of writing to my MP using this facility, but I wonder someone has actually done so without Revenue Protection getting involved due to ignorance, etc. I guess one needs to pick their battles?

USO - Posting Addresses to The King, Legislative Petitions, etc.
Has anyone actually ever used or seen letters that are delivered free of charge under the 7th Obligation of Royal Mail? Indeed, RM has the obligation of delivering, free of charge, Addresses to the Sovereign and Legislative Petitions to the House of Commons/Lords or the National Assemblies.
I'm thinking of writing to my MP using this facility, but I wonder someone has actually done so without Revenue Protection getting involved due to ignorance, etc. I guess one needs to pick their battles?

I doubt that anyone in RM has ever heard of this. Anything that's not got a stamp that isn't a Freepost address or an Article for the blind will get surcharged

I have seen mail for someone in the House of Lords. I don't think it had any postage on it.
It had to be delivered even if it meant opening the envelope to get the contents through the letterbox.
I don't think writing to your MP is covered.

Sounds unfortunate!! This clearly provides a social benefit (that's why Ofcom never includes it in their consultations), and it's nicely explained in the RM Scheme, article 25 (https://www.royalmail.com/sites/royalma ... t_2023.pdf):
25. Petitions to Parliaments and Assemblies
25.1. Special arrangements exist for the delivery of a petition to a member of either
House of Parliament (that is, the House of Commons or the House of Lords),
the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales or the Northern
Ireland Assembly.
25.1.1. For the purposes of section 25.1 a petition is a signed document
intended to be presented to a current member of either House of
Parliament, the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for
Wales or the Northern Ireland Assembly asking for action to be
taken on a particular issue.
25.2. We will deliver a petition to either House of Parliament, the Scottish
Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales or the Northern Ireland
Assembly free of charge as long as the special conditions set out below are
all met:
25.2.1. it is a signed original and not a copy,
25.2.2. it is within the size limits set out in section 6.3,
25.2.3. it does not weigh more than 2 kilograms,
25.2.4. is packed so the contents can easily be inspected,
