Phoning in sick query

Post by Col »

Hello :Very Happy

I work at the Nottingham MC and i'm a bit confused about the whole phoning up sick process. About a year ago it changed from having to phone up and leave a message with HR to having to phone up our line manager directly. Thing is, i'm certain it reverted back to the phoning HR way of doing things not long ago - though no one i encountered at work today seemed to know one way or the other.

Anyone know what the process is? Or does it change from mail centre to mail centre?

In my MC you have to phone the Book Room (attendance duty), and tell them you are sickand give
your name, duty number and attendance time. Make sure you get a sickness number or they might
claim you did not phone in if they didn't keep a record.

I have NEVER been given a phone number for phoning in sick. Perhaps I look too healthy !

Contact strategy varies from MC to MC.

Most seem to be adopting the speak to your line manager approach.

Always phone your Bookroom... Ask for the Screw on duty and always keep a record of the day and time you phoned... And the name of the person who took the call.... INFO like this could save your job.... I worked in the bookroom and that is where any info needs to go... PHG's normally answer the phones so chat with them... It should be a posties job, If not and a screw gets involved ask your union about the job and who should be doing it in your office because local agreement...

With cutbacks in place and the lack of PHG.s it might be only done by a screw and we all know how much you can trust most of them....? ;liar DONT WE????

Out of interest, just where do we stand with regards to supervisors phoning during your absence? Apparently it's perfectly acceptable to be phoned on a near daily basis at my office.
Don't blame me, don't shame me, just because I'm the one to tell you.

if you leave a number for them to phone you they will call as this is policy, if you dont they may actually turn up at your house or more likley write to you.it's a "to see if there is anything we can do to assist your SPEEDY return " call.
i removed my number from them quoting the data protection act, oh my were they amused. Could you believe, i was asked how they would contact me in future.
So i said to the mildly retarded man "before the widespread ownership of household telephones how did you do contact people?"
He said "well we used to write or maybe go round to their house".
"Aha a solution" i said.

a lot of people think this is a form of harassment, although nobody i am aware of has sucessfully persued it as that. If they have post the details and we'll all do it.
Confused... You won't be, after the next episode of. SOAP

I must admit, I do find it quit intrusive and irritating. I think claiming harassment is pushing it a bit too far though. It would be interesting though to hear from anyone who has successfully pursued harassment claims of this nature. I somewhat doubt we will though!!
