How trustworthy are barcode stamps regarding excess fee to pay?

Post by sholland »

I started this new thread rather than add to the current one I recently posted on regarding using multiple stamps for postage.

I am going to buy a quantity of LL 100g second class stamps before the increase.
Occasionally, there are complaints in the media of recipients being surcharged, as it was said by RM the stamp had already been used.
Yes, there are a lot of scams and fraudsters about, but surely not every complainant is trying to commit fraud?
Also, if the barcode had a tiny splash of ink, dirt or a scratch on it after posting, surely that would invalidate the scan?

I would be most upset if one of my quantity bought was surcharged say in a few months time when actually used.
IF it were, how can I prove my case? I don't think I can.
Thanks,
Rob

Had another thought. If a letter or parcel has several stamps on it, does the system still cope or does it need human intervention?
Thanks,

The vast majority of proper stamps get through, and indeed probably a lot of "fake stamps" as well.

What a lot of people do is buy them off Ebay or similar sites. Its actually against Ebays TOS for them to be sold there, but both the seller and buyer keep taking the chance.

Official stamps have unique codes embedded within them, and other invisible (not coded) security systems as well. Thats why I would only recommend buying them from Post Offices.

Thanks for the info.
I bought two books of 50 LL 100g today, pre increase price £1.15 each from my local PO.
I will take a picture of the 2 books next to my receipt and keep in case of any problems.

Yes, around a year ago I saw some "genuine" first class pre-barcode stamps last year. From Spain I think and something like £5 a book of ten or 10 books for £40 or so as buy it now. definitely dodgy!

Sholland - RM had trumpeted the fact that 2nd class wasn't going up but I'm genuinely gobsmacked following your post to find
out that 2nd class large is going up from 1.15 to 1.55 - unbelieveable! They sneakily never mentioned that it was only 2nd class standard
not going up!

@ Yellowbelly. That is why I bought some!
Also, 2 of these plus a 39p stamp will make sufficient to post a 2kg small parcel, non-signed for.
