Governments can't allow deflation as it makes debt more difficult to pay down.

I think it will still depend for items you buy at the supermarkets etc. My trusting nature would like to believe that once energy prices normalise supermarkets might pass on the savings to the consumer.mjd24 wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 12:32LouBarlow wrote: ↑23 Apr 2023, 21:24Is this deal going to lead to a pay cut? Say you accepted 10% and inflation was 10%. If in the following year inflation falls to 3% you still need an additional 3% over and above the 10% you had last year in order to keep pace.
You're confusing a decrease in inflation with an actual fall in prices.
Either way I’ll be voting for the deal that offers me more money by way of a pay cut.
As your initial comments completely contradicted itself.
Thus you not knowing what inflation means.
Inflation plays no part in whether this is an increase in pay or not. If you receive more money from your employer you cannot claim it is a pay cut.
My original point stands. If inflation decreased and bills likewise, you wouldn’t suddenly hand money back after your inflation busting raise.for prices to drop, we’d need negative inflation which pretty much never happens.
Even if inflation drops to 1%, prices are still rising!!

Well I suppose the alternative is a 16% rise but a 25% cull of posties to pay for it and the rest of you to have it added to your (already to large) jobs. Fancy that instead?

You are being obtuse - it's a REAL TERMS paycut. REAL TERMS reflect reality. We should all be interested in reality. We are all going to be manifestly poorer for three years in a row. That is the reality. But never mind Lou, you can console yourself that you have had a payrise.LouBarlow wrote: ↑23 Apr 2023, 19:16Inflation has nothing to do with it. They are offering more money. Re: This deal is a pay cut
No not really, they would have to reduce the workforce size to be able to pay above inflation rises, but as they also have a legal obligation to deliver the uso theyd also have to bring back commit to deliver as well.77SAMPOST77 wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 14:03How large they make the workload is irrellevent ,2yearpostie wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 13:44Well I suppose the alternative is a 16% rise but a 25% cull of posties to pay for it and the rest of you to have it added to your (already to large) jobs. IF you wanted an above inflation payrise to pay for it they would have to reduce the workforce, then YOU WOULDNT HAVE A FINISH TIME as to comply with the USO they would have to bring in commit to deliver, Thats why the union have tabled the agreement on the table.

I have not asked for a above inflation pay rise and I am not aware of anybody else asking for that .

Re: This deal is a pay cut
Well it beats not having one, that is for sure. I’m not sure where people are expecting the money to come from to fund a true inflation busting wage increase. As mentioned, cull the workforce to pay for it? We have had to agree to these concessions already, just to get what we have been offered, so I consider myself lucky.stevejm wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 14:04You are being obtuse - it's a REAL TERMS paycut. I mean, the title of the thread is literally making that point, albeit in a misleading way, because we have received a rise.77SAMPOST77 wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 14:33Why are mentioning an above inflation pay rise ?2yearpostie wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 14:26Thats the thing.77SAMPOST77 wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 14:21You can commit to deliver if you want ,2yearpostie wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 14:13No not really, they would have to reduce the workforce size to be able to pay above inflation rises, but as they also have a legal obligation to deliver the uso theyd also have to bring back commit to deliver as well.77SAMPOST77 wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 14:03How large they make the workload is irrellevent ,2yearpostie wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 13:44Well I suppose the alternative is a 16% rise but a 25% cull of posties to pay for it and the rest of you to have it added to your (already to large) jobs.
