Re: Mr ward and cwu
To the question of how long a walk should be depends on age and physical ability for me I feel OK with a round 4 hours maybe a bit more but lm in my late 50s and have done this job for over 35 years plus the job has become more mentally challenging compared to when I started with packets ,pda work and collections but saying that you have the option now of carrying lighter bags wish we had that 30 years ago sadly the damage has been done to a lot of older posties I don't think the union have ever acknowledged this problem enough more interested in giving us more work which is becoming harder to complete

Re: Mr ward and cwu
I used to do portering, averaged around 25000 steps on an 8 hour shift, 35000 on a 12 hour shift. I reckon an average of 2 miles an hour over a shift was normal. Using Google Fit for figures knock an hour off each shift for breaks.
Depends on how tall you are, how fast you move for number of steps per mile. If you have a short stride could be hitting 40000 steps.

Don't know about anyone else but mine is currently 15 miles a day, but it is being absorbed in our revision and put onto 2 other guys who already have 2 walks between them ...redheadedwoman wrote: ↑23 Apr 2023, 22:38How many miles is it now?
How many miles do you think it should be?

Like I said I will check this week and see what I am doing
Some days will be more than others some days less it just depends on how quick/slow I’m going each day it’s only an average

Re: Mr ward and cwu
My mate is a Porter at our office and I lent him my pedometer for a week to see just how much walking his job entailed and he averaged about 27000 steps a day so that's roughly 12 miles a day and he plods along so maybe redhead does do the amount she suggests. I average about 15000 steps myself but as I am sorting in a sleeve circle most of those steps are single or double steps to throw packets it's really only when Trucking my work either off the van or onto the vans that my step count involves real movement. This deal is horrendous the problem is years and years of people cutting corners coming in early not having breaks and rushing around to finish early is coming home to roost. Any walk postie who has 20 or more years in the job will have some sort of physical ailment normally around the joints. This causes their attendance to get worse as the years go on and now you won't get paid for the first 2 days of a second absence and god forbid a third absence means a Stage One. In spite of all the talk about it being at managers Discretion whether they get issued I fully expect 95% of all Stages to be issued regardless of good previous record. I will be voting No for this deal even though most of it will not directly affect me but fully understand those who will vote Yes either through worry what happens with a No vote or just the fact they have little fight left or no faith in the Union whatsoever

Flights of steps, blocks of flats, hills etc should massively reduce how long a walk should be.redheadedwoman wrote: ↑23 Apr 2023, 22:21I am but was a delivery postie for 25 yearsenskied wrote: ↑23 Apr 2023, 22:12Bet you are in processing Red.
I will ask again
How long should a walk be?
Its nuts that on 2 of my 3 walks im walking the same amount of time but on one of them i climb 90+ flights of steps (according to iphone) and the other is maximum 20.

Re: Mr ward and cwu
Wasnt automation meant to be the great saviour and would mean humans could work less hours?redheadedwoman wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 09:13This is the problem there is no maximum of how long a delivery should be and I believe there should be as none of us are getting any youngerguardianangel wrote: ↑24 Apr 2023, 05:47In my opinion a walking round should be no more than 3 hours and fill up the remainder of the time doing packets and more job sharing of rounds for part timers and more days to recover ,irs got to be a 4 day working week ,now id vote yes for that.
When I last done a walk 12 years ago it used to take me between 3-3.35 average which I could manage but I would definitely struggle now as due to savings of hours that walk got bigger
Has your office looked at a 4 day week duty structure?
Would the members be up for it as it means working a longer day 9.5 hours which could/will be even bigger walks
This is the problem we have how do you fill your working day if your indoor work is reduced due to automation
It’s a different world in a Mail Centre the job is totally different to delivery’s much more relaxing god you guys really are/have being done over and have my sympathy but I don’t see it getting any better for you all as savings will always come first
Is it beyond the realm of possibility that we dont have to fill all our hours, the ones lost due to automation? And get paid the same.
